In the men's 65kg weightlifting category, representing Vietnam is 16-year-old weightlifter Nguyen Thanh Duy. He did not have an impressive start, failing at 118kg in the clean and jerk.
After lifting the weight to 120kg, the Vietnamese weightlifter succeeded and then failed on the third attempt, when registering for the weight of 124kg. This result did not bring much hope to Thanh Duy, when there were 3 athletes who lifted over 120kg.
However, when it came to the clean and jerk, he showed impressive form. Under pressure from his opponents, he had to register a weight of 152kg on his first attempt and failed.
However, Thanh Duy rose up with determination. In the next lift, he successfully lifted 153kg.
In the decisive attempt, the Vietnamese weightlifter boldly registered for 156kg. Although this was not an easy challenge, Thanh Duy still succeeded.
This bold decision paid off. With a total lift of 276kg, Thanh Duy brought home the first gold medal for Vietnam at the 2025 Asian Youth Games. The silver medal went to Beibarys Yerseit (Uzbekistan, total lift 275kg) and the bronze medal went to Choe Jin Myong (North Korea, 274kg).
It is worth mentioning that with the reckless decision to register for 156kg, the Vietnamese athlete broke the Asian youth record in the men's 65kg weight class.
The Vietnamese delegation to the 2025 Asian Youth Games has 50 athletes competing in 11 sports. Up to now, in addition to Thanh Duy's gold medal, the delegation has 5 silver medals and 6 bronze medals.
From now until the final day of competition (October 30), Vietnam will still have a chance to improve its performance.
