In the early morning of October 28, weightlifter Nguyen Thanh Duy showed impressive performance in the Clean and Pull competition. After 3 rounds of lifting weights, he successfully conquered the 156kg mark, thereby leading this event and winning the Gold Medal (HCV).
Previously, in the Snatch category, Duy achieved the highest result of 120kg, ranking fourth. In total, the total lift of the young Vietnamese athlete reached 276kg - an outstanding achievement compared to his opponents and broke the Games record in this weight category. However, despite achieving the highest total lift and breaking the Games record, the 16-year-old Vietnamese talent was still not awarded the gold medal in the total lift because the separate competition format of the Games only awarded medals for the Snatch and Clean & Snatch categories.
Right after Thanh Duy in the total weightlifting are Yerseit Beibarys (Kazakhstan, 275 kg) and Choe Jin Myong (DPRK, 274 kg).
With the gold medal in the Clean and Fit event, Nguyen Thanh Duy brought home the first victory for the Vietnamese Sports Delegation at this year's Games. This is also an important milestone that helps the entire delegation relieve pressure after many days of competition without achieving gold medals in expected events such as Athletics and Muay.
However, the fact that the Vietnamese Weightlifting team was not counted for the overall medal made the teachers and students somewhat regretful. The achievement of 276kg not only surpassed the level of many top athletes in the region but also marked a memorable record for Nguyen Thanh Duy in his first time participating in the continental youth arena.
Previously, weightlifter Dao Thi Yen ( Hanoi , 44kg) successfully performed a snatch of 64kg, thereby winning a bronze medal, behind two Chinese and Indian athletes. In the clean and jerk competition at the 2025 Asian Youth Games, Vietnamese weightlifters ranked 4th with 77kg. Weightlifter Hung Van The (Nghe An) won a bronze medal in the men's 56kg snatch.
According to the updated results as of the morning of October 28, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation has won 1 gold medal, 5 silver medals and 6 bronze medals, temporarily ranking 19th on the overall table. The leading team is still China, followed by Uzbekistan and Thailand.
Vietnamese athletes will continue to compete in a number of important events in the remaining days of the Games, which will last until October 30.
The 2025 Asian Youth Games will bring together more than 30 countries and territories, competing in many Olympic sports. This is considered an important playground to evaluate, discover and nurture a generation of potential young athletes, preparing forces for major competitions such as the Youth Olympics and ASIAD in the future.
