Why parents should not neglect children?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên23/01/2025

The period leading up to the Lunar New Year is always the busiest time. Parents rush back and forth, dealing with end-of-year tasks, cleaning the house, and cooking. Experts advise against neglecting young children during this time.

Today, the 24th day of the 12th lunar month, preschool children and students of all levels in Ho Chi Minh City have started their Lunar New Year holiday for the Year of the Snake 2025.

Previously, as part of its school activities, City Kindergarten (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) held traditional Tet (Lunar New Year) festivals to help preschool children understand the traditional Tet holiday, experience Tet games and food, sing and dance, gain knowledge and skills, and strengthen their connections with friends and teachers. This is also an activity included in the current Preschool Education Program.

Before the Lunar New Year holiday, during the parent-teacher meeting summarizing the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year, Ms. Ho Thu Thao, Principal of Thanh Pho Kindergarten, reminded parents to ensure and maintain the same routines for their children at home as they do at school. Children need to eat and sleep on time. In particular, parents need to take precautions against infectious diseases during the holiday season, especially since many children suffer from respiratory illnesses during this time.

"We also remind parents that in the days leading up to and during the Lunar New Year, everyone is busy and hectic, but parents must pay close attention to caring for their children, ensuring electrical safety and safety while playing. Especially, children must be kept safe and away from hot water and boiling water, because during the Lunar New Year many families tend to focus more on cooking," said Ms. Ho Thu Thao.

Preventing the risk of children being burned by boiling water during the Lunar New Year.

Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Ha, Head of the Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases Department at District 8 Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that during the days leading up to and during Tet (Lunar New Year), parents are usually very busy, juggling work and household chores, cleaning, and cooking. During this time, children are on school break, especially those in preschool and kindergarten who are often very active. Therefore, parents must constantly keep an eye on their children and not neglect them, preventing potential accidents at home.

"During Tet (Lunar New Year), every family cooks more dishes than usual, such as boiling chicken, boiling banh chung and banh tet (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes), and making soup... Parents must keep a close eye on young children, keeping them far away from the stove and hot pots of water. Or, if after cooking, parents carelessly leave bowls of soup or pots of boiling water on the table within reach of young children, it's very dangerous for toddlers and preschoolers. Children are curious and active; they might reach for these bowls of boiling water, posing a serious risk of burns. Similarly, in the days leading up to Tet, parents are busy cleaning the house. Children sitting on the floor while parents carry hot pots of soup without paying attention could slip and burn the child. Therefore, it's always necessary to be vigilant to ensure absolute safety for children," Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Ha noted.

The Lunar New Year holiday is always a precious experience for the children at our school, and the teachers hope that they will have a safe and happy holiday.

Dr. Thanh Ha also emphasized that if a child is unfortunately burned by boiling water, parents must immediately rinse the affected area under cold running water. Absolutely do not apply toothpaste or fish sauce to the wound; this is ineffective and increases the risk of infection. Afterward, the child should be taken to the nearest medical facility immediately. In addition, during the Lunar New Year holiday, attention must be paid to ensuring food safety and hygiene, preventing the risk of food poisoning from consuming food of unknown origin or that has not been properly stored or prepared.

The Head of the Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases Department at District 8 Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, also stated that during Tet (Lunar New Year), many families still have the habit of using coal to cook banh chung, banh tet (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes), and stews (or using coal for heating in enclosed rooms in many cold climates). Medical experts advise against using coal for cooking and heating, especially in small, confined spaces, as this can cause asthma in children and carbon monoxide poisoning. There have been many cases of carbon monoxide poisoning with serious consequences in various localities in the past.
