This evening, January 5th, the Thai Binh Provincial Police confirmed to VietNamNet reporters that Mr. Luu Binh Nhuong's wife has proactively worked with authorities to pay compensation for her husband's actions.
Accordingly, Mr. Luu Binh Nhuong's wife went to the Civil Enforcement Department of Thai Binh province to deposit 300,000 USD (equivalent to over 7 billion VND) to compensate for the consequences of Mr. Nhuong's actions.
After his arrest, Mr. Nhuong authorized a relative to handle the consequences on his behalf. Mr. Nhuong's family submitted a request to the authorities to rectify the situation.
The police read out the arrest warrant for Mr. Luu Binh Nhuong.
As previously reported, on November 14th, the Investigation Police Department of Thai Binh province issued a decision to prosecute and temporarily detain Mr. Luu Binh Nhuong (60 years old, residing in Tay Ho district, Hanoi ) for the crime of "Extortion".
The arrest of Mr. Nhuong is related to the expanded investigation into the case of Pham Minh Cuong (38 years old, commonly known as Cuong "Quat", with 3 previous convictions, residing in Thuy Xuan commune, Thai Thuy district, Thai Binh province).
On December 26th, the Investigating Police Agency issued a supplementary decision to initiate criminal proceedings and indict Mr. Luu Binh Nhuong for the crime of "Abusing his position and authority to influence others for personal gain," as stipulated in Clause 4, Article 358 of the Penal Code.
The investigation has determined that, while serving as a Member of Parliament and Deputy Head of the People's Petition Committee, Mr. Luu Binh Nhuong abused his position and authority to influence others for personal gain. Initially, the investigating agency has determined the amount of money illegally obtained to be hundreds of thousands of USD.
