Previously, the Con Dao Special Economic Zone Department received 5 birds from a local resident. Each bird weighed about 400 grams. The unit then transferred them to the Con Dao National Park Management Board for support in raising and caring for them before releasing them back into the wild.
This bird has a brilliant metallic plumage, shimmering in shades of bronze and purple. Its unique physical structure makes it the only living member of the genus Caloenas and the closest living relative of the Dodo, the legendary extinct bird.

According to the Con Dao National Park Management Board, the five individuals are being carefully cared for and the timing of their release depends on the birds' natural adaptability.
In Vietnam, Nicobar pigeons can only be found in Con Dao National Park. This bird also has other common, easy-to-remember names such as collared pigeon, vulture pigeon or white-tailed pigeon. Every year, birds often migrate to Con Dao National Park from April to August.

They usually build simple nests on branches of trees with wide canopies 5-10m above the ground. When fully grown, the bird is about 34cm long with metallic blue plumage mixed with bronze.
Currently, tourists and locals can go to the Environmental Education Center of Con Dao National Park to directly admire and learn about this rare bird species.
