Digital transformation in journalism is a key development direction for media organizations. In this context, provincial media organizations have been striving to apply technology and improve professional quality to adapt to the digital age.
A dramatic transformation
Currently, the rapid development of science, technology, and digital technology has created new habits in information access for a large segment of the public. Recognizing this, over the past years, Binh Thuan Newspaper has been undergoing significant transformation to meet the ever-increasing needs of its readers. In the process of digital transformation, Binh Thuan Newspaper has launched a new online newspaper interface with a modern and user-friendly design. This has significantly contributed to bringing the voice of the government and people of Binh Thuan province to a wide audience both locally and internationally.
Furthermore, Binh Thuan Newspaper has been applying CMS software with convenient features for managing, editing, and publishing news articles, photos, and videos on both the Binh Thuan Newspaper and Binh Thuan Online. CMS software can be used on computers, iPads, and smartphones, so as long as there is an internet connection, all departments can publish the newspaper anytime, anywhere. This is the first step for Binh Thuan Newspaper in concretizing the objectives outlined in the draft Decision of the Prime Minister approving the Plan for the development of the network of press, radio, television, electronic information, and publishing facilities for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.
Mr. Bui Thanh Quang, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Binh Thuan Newspaper, stated: In line with the national digital transformation program, Binh Thuan Newspaper has built a digital platform over the years by managing its newsroom electronically. We have developed a newsroom that integrates modern technology, bringing all journalistic operations to the digital environment. Through this integrated newsroom environment, we can promptly grasp information and public opinion, thereby identifying information needs and meeting readers' desires at the right time. Reporters are no longer simply limited to writing or taking photos; they are now trained to become versatile journalists, proficient in various journalistic formats. A reporter can simultaneously gather information, film, and photograph to independently produce multimedia journalistic products. Building an integrated newsroom helps the agency fully utilize available resources and effectively monitor the work process of each reporter as well as the entire newsroom. Reporters' articles are updated with the date and time they enter the system, reflecting the editorial process of the newsroom. In the future, Binh Thuan Newspaper will continue to invest in funding and human resources to develop the newsroom into an important information channel, dominating many information fronts on various digital platforms, providing the fastest, most accurate, and most effective information on all aspects. All events occurring in Binh Thuan province and prominent and noteworthy issues domestically and internationally will be provided to readers quickly and promptly. Digital transformation will certainly help Binh Thuan Newspaper get closer to its readers.
Professional, humane, modern
The Plan for Implementing the Digital Transformation Strategy for Journalism until 2025, with a vision to 2030, in Binh Thuan province, recently issued by the Provincial People's Committee, has identified the following objectives: Digital transformation of journalism aims to build media agencies in a professional, humane, and modern direction; to effectively fulfill the mission of information and propaganda serving the revolutionary cause of the Party and the country's reform process. Simultaneously, it aims to ensure the leading role in guiding public opinion, maintaining information sovereignty in cyberspace; creating new revenue streams; and promoting the development of the digital content industry.
To achieve the above objectives, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh assigned the Department of Information and Communications the responsibility to lead and coordinate with relevant departments, agencies, and localities within their authority to provide feedback on legal documents promoting digital transformation in journalism and to contribute to the development of related legal documents. Simultaneously, the Department will deploy national digital platforms for local media agencies. It will also lead the development of digital platforms to support media agencies in their digital transformation and the development of digital journalistic products; and implement solutions to support media agencies in accelerating digital transformation. Furthermore, it will lead or coordinate the organization of training and professional development programs to improve the quality of human resources in media agencies, meeting the requirements of digital transformation in journalism.
For the Department of Finance, based on the annual budget estimates of the departments and agencies, the Department of Finance compiles and advises the Provincial People's Committee on the allocation of recurrent expenditure to implement the plan in accordance with the provisions of the State Budget Law and in line with the local budget capacity.
The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee assigned responsibility to Binh Thuan Newspaper, Binh Thuan Radio and Television Station, and the Provincial Arts and Literature Magazine to effectively implement the digital transformation plan of their respective media agencies. They are to allocate the necessary facilities and finances for the implementation of digital transformation activities, and to raise awareness and knowledge about digital transformation among the leadership, editors, and reporters of these media agencies.
