An Giang province: An oxygen tank exploded, causing a charity ambulance carrying a patient to catch fire; one person suffered minor burns, on the afternoon of February 16th.
At approximately 10:30 AM, Mr. Vo Van Cop Em, 42 years old, was driving a specialized ambulance to pick up a 59-year-old female patient and her relatives in Phu Dong hamlet, Phu Xuan commune, Phu Tan district. Shortly after driving, the medical oxygen cylinder in the vehicle exploded, causing a fire that spread to nearby objects.

The driver stopped the vehicle and, along with family members, helped the patient out. People along the roadside used available items to try and put out the fire, but without success. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene and extinguished the blaze after about 30 minutes.
The fire caused minor burns to the patient's family members' hands. The patient himself was transported to the district hospital by a separate ambulance.
Mr. Tran Tan Loi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Xuan commune, said that the ambulance was acquired through social mobilization efforts two years ago. It is a specialized vehicle with full equipment, valued at approximately 800 million VND. The ambulance provides free transportation to hospitals for residents of the commune and neighboring areas. The drivers are recruited by the local government from within the commune and do not receive any remuneration.
"Only in cases of serious illness do the commune's medical team accompany the drivers. The drivers have received training in first aid skills and the use of equipment on the vehicle," Mr. Loi said, adding that he will soon propose to the relevant authorities to provide guidance on inspecting and maintaining the oxygen tanks on the vehicles to ensure safety.
