This is considered the last chance for candidates wishing to enter high-quality majors and schools, but they need to consider carefully and cautiously before submitting their applications.
"Diagnose" the cause
After nearly 10 years, this year Hanoi Medical University opened 80 more quotas for the Social Work major. Admission requirements are based on high school graduation exam scores, with a threshold of 17 points.
Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy is recruiting up to 210 additional students in key majors such as Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and Medical Laboratory Technology. The minimum score ranges from 20 to 25.33 points (based on high school graduation exam scores). Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy also announced the recruitment of 130 more students for three majors: Preventive Medicine, Nursing, and Laboratory Technology.
In particular, the Pedagogy major, which is considered the "hottest" major in this year's admission season, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education also announced additional recruitment of 230 students for 7 majors, including: Educational Technology, Information Technology, Russian, French, Japanese, Korean Languages and International Studies.
Quy Nhon University is recruiting for 5 additional pedagogical majors: Primary Education, Information Technology Pedagogy, Literature Pedagogy, History Pedagogy, Geography Pedagogy, although the standard scores for these majors range from 26.85 to 27.21.
Sharing about the additional enrollment, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Dinh Tung - Vice Principal of Hanoi Medical University, said that the first reason comes from the serious decline in the number of candidates taking the B00 combination exam (Math, Chemistry, Biology) - the traditional combination for admission to the medical and pharmaceutical industry.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, there are about 47,000 candidates taking all three subjects in the B00 group. In 2024, this number will be 7 times higher. "Thus, the number of candidates eligible for admission to the health sector this year has decreased sharply, while the total quota for the medical sector in 2025 has increased by nearly 20%, reaching about 53,000 targets. When the number of candidates with the B00 group is only 1/7, but the quota increases, the imbalance is inevitable" - Associate Professor, Dr. Le Dinh Tung analyzed.
In addition, the leaders of Hanoi Medical University said that the health sector is also affected by strict admission regulations. Many schools still only consider high school graduation exam scores, not school records or competency assessment scores. This limits the schools' recruitment resources, especially in the context of the decreasing number of candidates choosing to study the B00 combination.
The fact that candidates do not confirm their admission is also the reason why many schools have to consider additional admissions even though they have enough admissions. Information from Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy said that many candidates passed the first round of admissions but did not confirm their admissions because they found the additional minimum scores at other schools more attractive or more suitable to their own abilities.

Cannot be "sure" of being accepted
According to Dr. Le Viet Khuyen - Vice President of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges, this year the "virtual" benchmark score increased, causing candidates to miss the opportunity to confirm or choose other options such as college, vocational training, or short-term study abroad.
In addition, many students do not confirm their admission after being admitted because of the high tuition fees of the major/school. This fact makes many candidates, even though they are admitted, still not qualified to study. Instead, many families send their children to vocational schools or colleges with lower costs, shorter study time and faster job opportunities.
According to regulations, candidates who have not been admitted or have been admitted but have not confirmed their admission on the General Admission Support System can register for additional admission rounds according to the plan and instructions of the training institution. Mr. Nguyen Quang Trung - Deputy Head of the Communications and Admissions Department, University of Commerce, noted that candidates need to closely follow the additional admission plan of the training institution, especially the time to receive documents, "floor scores" and additional criteria.
In reality, the additional admission quota is often not much and the benchmark score can be very high. Therefore, candidates cannot be "sure" of being admitted in this round, but still have to face competition and the risk of being eliminated. Therefore, students need to research carefully and have a strategy to register their wishes right from the general admission round of the Ministry of Education and Training.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Trung, the supplementary examination is a "narrow door" but there are many people who go, the standard score is often higher than the first round, so if the decision is wrong, it is easy to lose the opportunity to be admitted. When participating in the supplementary examination, candidates must not ignore the additional criteria (if any). In previous admission seasons, many candidates were "wrongly rejected" because they did not pay attention to this requirement of the training institution. In addition, students should note the important rules below to avoid unnecessary disappointment:
Firstly, the benchmark score is never lower than the first round: According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, the score for receiving applications and the passing score of the supplementary round must be equal to or higher than the passing score of the first round. Therefore, never think that the supplementary round will be easier. In fact, the score may be higher due to the small quota, but the number of candidates with high scores who have not been admitted is still very large.
Second, additional admission opportunities mainly come from mid-ranked schools, less competitive majors, or branches of large schools.
Third, quotas are very limited: The number of quotas in the supplementary round is often small, so the competition will be fierce. Be mentally prepared and have a good grasp of information about the major and school you intend to apply to so as not to miss the opportunity.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Trung, candidates who do not pass any of their wishes should not worry too much, because there are many other paths. They can register for additional majors and schools that still have quotas, or choose other levels of education such as college or intermediate level.
