After just 1-2 hours of competition, runners from Kenya together dominated the long distances of the VPIM race.
VPIM 2024 has more than 11,000 athletes participating, competing in 4 distances: 42km, 21km, 10km and 5km. The athletes all start from Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square and finish on Tran Nhan Tong Street, with the running course standardized according to international standards by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).
In the men's 42km distance, the last-minute withdrawal of defending champion Pham Tien San has reduced this year's top race to a contest between two athletes from Kenya, Japhet Rono and Edwin Yebe.
Japhet Rono was the first athlete to finish the 42 km distance.
In fact, the Vietnamese runners chased the African duo until about the 10th kilometer but could not maintain the pace, allowing Japhet Rono and Edwin Yebe to overtake them, creating a two-horse race to the finish line. Japhet Rono then finished first with a time of 2 hours and 35 minutes, 19 seconds ahead of Edwin Yebe.
Sharing after winning the championship, Japhet Rono said he was satisfied with his result. "Today is a great day and I have won my first championship in Vietnam. This is a large-scale tournament, organized very professionally, the organizers pay great attention to and take care of the athletes' experience. I am most impressed by the number of water stations arranged along the running route, which greatly support the runners' energy" - Japhet Rono shared.
Before participating in VPIM 2024, Japhet Rono also participated in another race in Hanoi and only finished second. Japhet Rono's best time recorded for the 42km distance is 2 hours 23 minutes, which he created at the Bintulu Marathon last November.
Athlete Jane Wanjiru Muiriuki confidently conquers the track
In the women's 42km event, Japhet Rono's compatriot Jane Wanjiru Muiriuki also had no competitors for most of the race.
The female athlete born in 1982 finished first with a time of 3 hours, 6 minutes more than the second place winner Nong Thi Chang.
Another Kenyan athlete, Benson Oloisunga, also won the men's 21km race in 1 hour 11 minutes.
Meanwhile, the female champion of this distance is Bui Thu Ha with a time of 1 hour 21 minutes.
This year's race was more exciting in the middle distances. Luong Duc Phuoc won the men's 10km championship with a time of 33 minutes and 37 seconds, beating Nguyen Hoang Thinh by 3 seconds. Doan Thu Hang won the women's 10km championship with a time of 38 minutes and 27 seconds, beating the runner-up Hoang Thi Ngoc Anh by exactly 1 second.
Finally, in the 5km distance, the male champion was Sam Van Doi and the female champion was Bui Thi Ngan.
