Some of Vietnam's top representatives are included in the ranking of the world's most influential universities in 2024.

More and more schools are being ranked.

At noon on June 12th (Vietnam time), the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine in the UK announced its ranking of the world's most influential universities for 2024. This year, Vietnam has 13 representatives in the top rankings, four more than last year. Among them, four universities are new to the ranking: Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Van Lang University, Lac Hong University, and Viet Duc University. Of the nine existing universities, three moved up in rank, two dropped, and four maintained their rankings.

Specifically, among 2,152 universities from 125 countries and territories, Nguyen Tat Thanh University is ranked in the 301-400 group worldwide and leads all Vietnamese universities. Following closely behind are universities tied in the 401-600 group, including Vietnam National University, Hanoi; Duy Tan University (no change in ranking);FPT University; Ton Duc Thang University; National Economics University; Ton Duc Thang University (upgraded from the 601-800 group); and Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (downgraded from the 301-400 group).

Hanoi University of Science and Technology maintained its ranking in the 601-800 group, while Van Lang University appeared for the first time in the 801-1000 group. Phenikaa University, which previously held the 801-1000 ranking, dropped to the 1001-1500 group in 2024, ranking alongside universities such as Ho Chi Minh City Open University, Lac Hong University, and Viet Duc University. Overall, most of the new universities were ranked in the lower tiers, with only Nguyen Tat Thanh University appearing in the top group.

This is the sixth year that THE has ranked the world's most influential universities. Notably, in recent years, Vietnam has had an increasing number of representatives in this ranking, from only Ton Duc Thang University in 2019 (in the 101-200 group), the number of universities has gradually increased to 2 (2020), 4 (2021), 7 (2022), 9 (2023) and currently 13.

Previously, in the 2024 World University Rankings, Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University were both in the 601-800 group out of more than 1,900 universities, leading Vietnamese universities, but had dropped in rank compared to their 401-500 position in 2023. Hanoi National University dropped from 1,001-1,200 to 1,201-1,500. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and Hue University all remained in the 1,501+ ranking, maintaining their positions.

What is the ranking method?

Another notable aspect of this influential ranking is that it doesn't evaluate universities based on academic indicators such as research and teaching, unlike other THE rankings, but rather focuses on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Of these, SDG 17 (cooperation for development goals) accounts for 22% of the weighting.

Next, the ranking will weight the three other SDGs in which the school has strengths, each accounting for 26% of the total weight. The remaining 16 SDGs include: good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; sustainable economic growth and employment; reducing inequality; sustainable cities and communities; climate protection; water resources and the environment; and peace, justice, and strong institutions.

In addition to the general criterion of cooperation for development goals, Vietnamese universities are often ranked based on criteria such as good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; sustainable economic growth and employment; sustainable cities and communities; peace, justice, and strong institutions... Notably, Phenikaa University and the National Economics University also received points for poverty eradication.

This year, Western Sydney University (Australia) continues to hold the top spot for the third consecutive year, while the University of Manchester (UK) and the University of Tasmania (Australia) share second place. Aalborg University (Denmark) is ranked fourth, and RMIT University (Australia) is ranked fifth. Institut Agro (France) is the top newcomer in 2024 at number 21, while India has the most representatives in the ranking of influential institutions with 96 units.

THE is one of the three most prestigious, experienced, and influential university ranking organizations in the world, alongside QS (UK) and Shanghai Ranking Consultancy (China). This organization began ranking universities in 2004, alongside QS, a year after the world first had a global university ranking published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (later Shanghai Ranking Consultancy).
