At 9:00 a.m. on December 14, while on patrol, soldiers of the Co To Border Guard Station (Co To island district, Quang Ninh province) recorded 3 whales appearing in the southeast of Co To island, about 6 nautical miles from shore.

The 35-second clip recorded by soldiers at the Co To Border Guard Station shows a pod of three whales, nearly 20 meters long, with their mouths wide open as they emerge from the sea to hunt for prey.

3 whales surfaced to hunt

It is known that in the past 4 months, whales have continuously appeared in the Co To sea area. Specifically, in July 2023, a pod of 4-5 whales regularly appeared in the area from Ha Mai to Dau Trau. By the end of September 2023, whales continued to forage for 1 hour in the Co To island area.

According to local authorities and residents, whale sightings were rare in previous years. However, in 2023, pods of whales appeared continuously in this sea area.

Experts from the Institute of Oceanography said the phenomenon of whales continuously appearing in the Co To area to forage is a positive sign showing that the marine environment here is clean and fresh.

This is a good condition for marine life to grow, especially rare species. And it is also a positive result from the drastic implementation of the Project "Co To District without plastic waste".
