Hanoi University of Medicine and Pharmacy - Vietnam National University was established on October 27, 2020 under the decision of the Prime Minister, on the basis of upgrading the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy - established in 2010, inheriting the medical training tradition of Indochina University since 1906.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thanh, Rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy - VNU, said that up to now, the school has 5 faculties including: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Public Health , Faculty of Basic Medicine and Pharmacy; has 3 affiliated units and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Currently, the school has 464 staff, including 14 professors, 75 associate professors, 139 doctors.

In particular, the Board of Directors of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy - VNU includes many directors and former directors of major hospitals. In addition to Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thanh, Principal, former Director of Hospital E; the school currently has 6 vice principals. Of which, 3/6 vice principals of the school are directors of major hospitals, including: Associate Professor Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh, Director of the Central Obstetrics Hospital; Dr. Duong Duc Hung, Director of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.
According to Mr. Thanh, from the initial scale (2012) with only two training majors (Medicine, Pharmacy) with 100 students in the first course, up to now, the school has had 6 undergraduate training programs, enrolling over 1,000 students/year. At the postgraduate level, the school has implemented 30 programs (Residency, Specialist I and Master), enrolling over 500 students/year. In the near future, the school will enroll students in a master's training program for international students and open more doctoral training programs.

Scientific research and knowledge transfer activities are also constantly promoted with many national and ministerial-level topics and prestigious international publications, contributing to solving urgent public health issues. In the first 9 months of 2025 alone, the school published 158 international articles, won 3 VNU-level scientific research awards, had 5 outstanding scientists, and many training programs were quality-assessed according to national standards. In the 2024-2025 school year, the school continued to expand international cooperation, implementing student exchange programs with prestigious universities such as Paris-Saclay, Mahidol, Thammasat, and providing master's training for international students.
Thanks to its tireless efforts, on October 22, 2025, the school was awarded the Third Class Labor Medal by the President.

Speaking at the ceremony, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Minh Son, Director of Hanoi National University, said that this is a worthy recognition and the clearest proof of the efforts and great contributions of the school. To continue promoting the achievements, Mr. Son suggested that the University of Medicine and Pharmacy continue to affirm its position as a leading training center in the field of health sciences, developing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary training programs on the basis of promoting the overall and comprehensive strength of Hanoi National University. At the same time, strongly applying advanced technologies, digital transformation, artificial intelligence in management, teaching, and medical practice to create a workforce capable of working in a smart medical environment.
In particular, it is necessary to be steadfast in the goal of knowledge. "The ultimate goal is to train doctors who are not only good at their profession but also have good medical ethics, meeting the requirements of improving quality, protecting, caring for, and improving people's health," said the Director of Hanoi National University.
