The Japan Disaster and Forest Fire Management Agency reported one person missing and more than 100 injured. According to Kyushu Electric, more than 35,000 homes were without power in Kagoshima Prefecture, in southern Kyushu.
Shanshan, with its eye in the Pacific Ocean about 480 km from Tokyo, brought heavy rain as far north as Hokkaido prefecture. Although downgraded to a tropical storm on Friday, the typhoon still had gusts of wind reaching up to 90 km/h.
Authorities have issued flood and landslide warnings across the country since the storm made landfall, halting air and rail services and closing factories. NHK reported that the storm is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by the end of the week but is anticipated to continue bringing heavy rain.
