Alexander-Arnold cost Real Madrid a fortune. |
Alexander-Arnold played in Real Madrid's 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in round 19 of La Liga on December 4. The highlight of the former Liverpool star was the assist for Kylian Mbappe to score the opening goal.
However, Alexander-Arnold had to leave the field in the 55th minute due to injury, making way for Raul Asencio. MRI results brought bad news for Real Madrid when the English defender tore his rectus femoris muscle, expected to be out for at least two months.
According to BBC , Alexander-Arnold's injury means Real Madrid will have to pay him around $2 million in wages during his recovery period, when his income is around $333,000 per week. This figure could decrease if Alexander-Arnold recovers sooner than expected, but for now it is still a significant loss for the Royal team.
Despite his struggles in his first season in Spain, Alexander-Arnold was defended by coach Xabi Alonso. The Spanish coach said: “Trent is a top player. We need him. This is his first year and the adaptation period is normal. He is also very progressive and we will support Trent as best we can.”
Real Madrid return to La Liga action this weekend when they host Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu.
