The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Strategic Plan 2026-2030 is on track to be completed by March this year, paving the way for its adoption by the bloc’s leaders at the 46th ASEAN Summit scheduled to take place in Malaysia next May, said Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr. Kao Kim Hourn.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Kuala Lumpur, speaking to the press after attending the 31st ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting (AEM) in Johor state (Malaysia), Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn said that the AEC Strategic Plan 2026-2030 is ready for adoption next May.
Meanwhile, according to Malaysian Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who chaired the 31st AEM, the AEC Strategic Plan was built from extensive meetings with many stakeholders to create an AEC that is action-oriented, sustainable, dynamic, adaptive, agile and inclusive.
At the 31st ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting (AEM), Mr. Tengku Zafrul stated that several important ASEAN initiatives had been adopted, particularly the implementation of the roadmap for the ASEAN Digital Enterprise Identification Number and the negotiating principles for the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Intellectual Property Cooperation (AFAIPC) 2.0.
He said other initiatives include the ASEAN Pharmaceutical Regulatory Framework Agreement (APRFA), which is expected to be signed at the 57th AEM meeting in September 2025.
Mr. Tengku Zafrul emphasized that all these documents lay an important foundation for creating a more competitive economy, as well as facilitating trade and business in the region.
Malaysia's agenda as ASEAN Chair includes strengthening intra-ASEAN trade and investment and taking the lead in efforts to explore and expand economic cooperation and partnerships outside the ASEAN region.
