Sugar-Free Oreos Surprise with 'No Difference' Flavor

On December 9, food company Mondelez announced that it will launch the sugar-free Oreo product lines Oreo Zero Sugar and Oreo Double Stuf Zero Sugar in the US market, marking the permanent addition of these two products to the company's Oreo product line.

This is the first time Mondelez has sold sugar-free Oreos in the US. The company said the product is already sold in Europe and China.

Mondelez says it spent four years developing the sugar-free Oreo to ensure it still tastes like the original.

To create sweetness, Oreos contain maltitol, a sugar alcohol also found in some fruits and vegetables; polydextrose, a soluble fiber; sucralose, a sugar-derived sweetener; and acesulfame potassium, a synthetic sweetener.

Comparing nutritional data between Oreo Zero Sugar and regular Oreo is quite complex, due to the different serving sizes.

One serving of Oreo Zero Sugar, defined as 22.6 grams, has 90 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, and 16 grams of carbohydrates. One serving of regular Oreo, defined as three cookies or 34 grams, has 160 calories, 7 grams of fat, and 25 grams of carbohydrates.

The biggest difference is that a serving of regular Oreo contains 13 grams of added sugar, or 26% of your daily recommended intake. Sugar-Free Oreos contain no sugar.

Mondelez says consumers are increasingly looking for what it calls “conscious indulgence,” and the new Oreo will fill an existing gap in the sugar-free sandwich cookie market.

Others have also noticed a trend toward healthier snacks. In a report earlier this year, market research firm Circana found that a majority of Americans are looking for snacks that they consider “healthy.”

Conagra Brands, the maker of popcorn and Slim Jim deli meats, said in a recent snack report that millennials and Gen Z consumers, in particular, are looking for snacks that are portion-controlled and health-focused.

Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, launched in 2017, saw sales increase 9% last year, while sales of original Coca-Cola increased just 2%.

Mondelez also faces competition from Hershey, which sells sugar-free versions of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and other candies, and Voortman, a brand of sugar-free wafer cookies.

Mondelez is a giant American multinational food corporation, famous for its global confectionery and snack products and owns famous brands such as Oreo, Cadbury, Toblerone, Ritz, and in Vietnam, familiar products such as Kinh Do cakes, Cosy, Solite.

Previously, Manufacturer Mondelez International said Oreo is "the best-selling cookie brand of the 21st century."

However, not everyone knows that the "chocolate ice cream" feature that creates Oreo's attractive flavor "came after" another brand.

The original version of the chocolate cream sandwich first appeared in 1908 under the name "Hydrox," developed by a company called Sunshine Biscuits.
