Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump are campaigning hard in battleground states in the final hours before the 2024 US election.

Efforts to break through in the final hours

As the race for the White House draws to a close, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump are focusing their campaigns on three "Blue Wall" states: Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

Kamala Harris spent Monday in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state with 19 electoral votes. Pennsylvania voted for Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020.

On November 3 (local time), Mr. Trump will hold rallies in three smaller cities where he can attract support from rural voters. He will start the day in Lititz, Pennsylvania, then travel to Kinston, North Carolina in the afternoon and end with an evening rally in Macon, Georgia.

At least 77 million Americans have voted early, nearly half of the votes cast in the 2020 election, according to the latest figures.

On Sunday night at Michigan State University, Ms. Harris spoke in an almost entirely upbeat tone, reminiscent of the early days of her campaign when she championed the “ politics of joy” and the theme of “freedom.”

“From the beginning, our campaign has not been about what we are against, but what we are for,” she said. She promised to address issues such as the economy , women’s rights, especially access to health care and abortion rights, in the wake of the 2022 Supreme Court decision that eliminated the right, and to seek consensus in building a broad coalition of voters from different backgrounds, including progressive lawmakers and moderates, to find common solutions to the social, economic and political problems facing the United States.

For his part, Mr. Trump, with the slogans: "Make America Great Again" and "America First" , has taken a tough approach to the immigration issue and made heavy criticisms of Ms. Harris and Mr. Biden... using that as the basis for his argument for the race for a second term.

He has criticized Democrats for inflation in the economy, while promising to lead an economic "golden age," end international conflicts and secure America's southern border.

However, on Sunday, Mr. Trump claimed that the US elections were rigged against him. He expressed views that involved aggression and hostility towards journalists for criticizing and reporting unfavorable information against him.

He said he "should not leave the White House in 2021," implying that he "feels he was treated unfairly when he was stripped of power." "Kamala broke it. I'm going to fix it," implying that he would fix the problems he said were caused by Kamala Harris.

The election is likely to be decided in seven states. Mr Trump won Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin in 2016, but those states flipped to Mr Biden in 2020.

Additionally, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada are also in the southern battlegrounds of the presidential election map, where the results could influence his victory.

In recent days, Ms. Harris’s team has expressed confidence, noting that there is a large gender gap in early voting data.

A POLITICO analysis found that women now account for about 55% of early votes, while men account for only about 45%. That creates a 10% gender gap, suggesting that women are voting significantly more early than men in battleground states. They also suggest that late-deciding voters are likely to favor Harris.

Harris’s campaign mobilized more than 90,000 volunteers this weekend to rally voters and knocked on more than 3 million doors in battleground states. But her aides continue to insist she is in a weak position due to a host of other competing factors.

In contrast, Mr. Trump’s team also expressed confidence that the former president’s populist appeal would attract young and working-class voters from a variety of ethnicities. They believed that Mr. Trump could create a Republican coalition, despite the party’s other traditional voting groups, especially college-educated voters, gradually shifting toward the Democrats.

Historical results

Whatever the outcome on Election Day, it will be historic, according to AP. If Mr. Trump wins, he will be the first sitting president to be impeached and convicted of a crime.

This happened because he was charged and convicted in a trial involving using money to hide an extramarital affair (commonly known as a "hush-money case") in New York.

This is the first time in US history that a presidential candidate convicted of a crime has continued to run for office and has a chance to return to the White House, because the US legal system places very few conditions on presidential candidates. Among them, they must be a natural-born citizen of the US, at least 35 years old and have lived in the US for at least 14 years. There is no provision in the constitution that excludes people with criminal records from running for office or becoming President.

If he wins, Mr. Trump will become the second President in US history to have two non-consecutive terms, meaning a person once held the position of President, then left office, and then was re-elected for a new term.

This happened to President Grover Cleveland, who served two separate terms: the first from 1885 to 1889 and the second from 1893 to 1897. This meant that he would have the power to end other pending federal investigations, including cases involving him, such as the bribery case mentioned above.

In 2021, Ms. Harris became the first Black woman and the first person of South Asian descent to serve as Vice President to Mr. Joe Biden in US history.

The event had great symbolic significance, as it expanded opportunities for minority communities in the American political system. These minority communities have long faced many barriers, from discrimination, limited access to economic andeducational opportunities, to underrepresentation in leadership and decision-making positions.

So, the fact that Ms. Harris, a woman of color and of South Asian descent, has risen to such a powerful position in government is a symbol of the growing diversity of the American political system. To achieve this position, Ms. Harris has had a long and distinguished career, from prosecutor to California senator.

Specifically, Ms. Harris's outstanding achievements are highlighted as policies supporting social justice, reforming the justice system and health care. As Vice President, she continues to play an important role in leading programs such as the strategy to reduce illegal immigration in the Northern Triangle, labor reform and promoting voting rights.

These efforts are a testament to her commitment to creating change, paving the way and inspiring other women and people of color to enter politics.

Vice President Harris has since surged to the top of the Democratic field after Biden's disastrous performance at a debate in June, when he faced sharp questions and responses, especially about his age and leadership abilities.

He lost his form when he failed to deliver a convincing debate performance and was slow to respond to his opponent's arguments. This "inauthentic performance" sparked many opinions within the Democratic Party, eventually leading to his withdrawal from the race. It was just one of many incidents that happened in this year's campaign.
