Vice President Kamala Harris officially became the Democratic Party's 2024 presidential nominee after a five-day online voting round by party delegates concluded on the night of August 5th, with the party declaring that 99% of delegates had voted for her. The party said it would officially certify the votes before its convention later this month in Chicago.

"I am very proud to confirm that Vice President Harris has secured a majority of the votes from all convention delegates and will be the Democratic Party's nominee," said Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Jaime Harrison.
Harris is expected to announce her running mate this week. She and her running mate will begin their campaign in seven battleground states on the evening of August 6th, starting with a rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Harris's nomination was already clear since the Vice President was the only eligible candidate to participate in the presidential nomination vote. However, this still marks a historic milestone for the United States, as she becomes the first woman of color to lead a major national political party.
Harris's official victory in the election came two weeks after President Biden announced that he would end his 2024 re-election campaign with former President Trump, the Republican candidate.
Biden's immediate endorsement of Harris sparked a wave of support for the Vice President from governors, senators, House members, and other Democratic leaders. Within 36 hours, Harris declared she had secured the party's nomination with a majority of nearly 4,000 delegates.
An AP poll, conducted after Biden's withdrawal, showed 46% of Americans had a favorable view of Harris, while a nearly equal percentage had an unfavorable view of her. But many Democrats said they were more pleased with her than with Biden.
Democratic Senator Alex Padilla, who was chosen to succeed Harris in the U.S. Senate when she became Vice President, said: "With the unique voice of a new generation, of a prosecutor and a woman when fundamental rights – especially reproductive rights – are threatened, it seems that destiny has set its course for her at this time."
