A food website introduces Vietnamese banh mi, pronounced "bun mee," as inheriting culinary heritage from France and China. Over time, banh mi has been modified and creatively adapted by locals, becoming a signature dish of Vietnam. Vietnamese banh mi has long been recognized as delicious worldwide. On March 24, 2011, the term "banh mi" was recognized in the Oxford English Dictionary with the note "A type of Vietnamese sandwich."

Taste Atlas describes this bread as having a crust similar to a French baguette. Vietnamese bread is characterized by its crispy, thin crust and soft, fluffy interior. In contrast, French baguettes are crispy, firm, and chewy. The bread recipe, upon being introduced to Vietnam, has been modified to suit local tastes.

The filling inside is what gives Vietnamese banh mi its unique flavor. The filling usually includes meat, pate, herbs, pickled vegetables, and shredded green chilies. Each region has its own variations of the filling. Two other versions of Vietnamese banh mi also made it onto Taste Atlas 's ranking: banh mi with meat, ranked 9th with 4.4/5 stars, and banh mi with roasted pork, ranked 29th with 4.3/5 stars.

Vietnamese sandwiches (Banh mi) are a popular dish among foreign tourists visiting Vietnam. Food websites suggest that visitors can buy banh mi and roasted pork banh mi anywhere, from street vendors to large bakeries in tourist cities across Vietnam. However, roasted pork banh mi is most popular in Ho Chi Minh City. Banh mi can be enjoyed at any meal of the day.

In the top 5 sandwiches, following Vietnamese banh mi is tombik döner, also known as gobit kebab, a Turkish grilled meat sandwich. Third is shawarma from India. Fourth is tortas from Mexico. Fifth is the Maine lobster sandwich from the USA.

Vietnamese banh mi has been honored numerous times by Taste Atlas. In February 2023, the food website announced the 50 best street foods in the world, with Vietnamese banh mi ranking 6th.
