Arrest of suspect for fraud in court case, appropriating nearly 3 billion VND

On June 22, information from the Investigation Police Department of Ha Tinh Province said that this unit has just issued a decision to prosecute the case, prosecute the accused, and temporarily detain Vu Anh Tuan (48 years old, residing in Dan Phuong commune, Dan Phuong district, Hanoi city) for 4 months to investigate the crime of fraud and property appropriation.

According to the investigation agency's documents, previously, Ms. NTL (46 years old, residing in Thien Cam Town, Cam Xuyen District, Ha Tinh) had a son, Nguyen Dinh Chinh (28 years old), arrested and prosecuted by the Investigation Police Department of Ha Tinh Province for participating in the illegal transportation of 30 kg of synthetic drugs.

In April 2021, Chinh was sentenced to life in prison by the People's Court of Ha Tinh province for illegally transporting drugs. After the first instance trial, Ms. L. gave Mr. NTQ (Chinh's defense lawyer) 1.5 billion VND to file an appeal and seek a sentence reduction for her son.

After receiving the money, lawyer Q. met and gave Vu Anh Tuan 600 million VND to ask this person to find a way to reduce Chinh's sentence.

Tuan embezzled nearly 3 billion VND from his family for helping his son get a sentence.

On November 23, 2021, the High People's Court in Hanoi heard the appeal and upheld the life sentence for defendant Chinh. Immediately after the end of the trial, Ms. L. met with lawyer Q. and Tuan to ask for the money back. When they met, Tuan blamed lawyer Q. for missing his work by not asking the panel of judges to postpone the trial.

At this meeting, Tuan introduced himself as a special agent in the police force and said he could get Ms. L.'s son out of prison, who was serving a life sentence. Tuan promised that by November 28, 2022, Ms. L.'s son would be able to return home.

To get her son out of jail, Ms. L. gave Tuan a total of more than 3.7 billion VND. After learning she had been scammed, Ms. L. repeatedly asked for her money back, but Tuan was only able to return a small portion of the money he had embezzled.

Based on collected documents and evidence, the Investigation Police Agency of Ha Tinh Province has sufficient grounds to determine that Tuan committed fraud and appropriated nearly 3 billion VND from Ms. L.
