(Dan Tri) - After two decades of construction and many delays, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) was officially inaugurated near the Giza pyramid complex, on the outskirts of Cairo (Egypt).

According to The Guardian , the museum covers an area of ​​about 470,000 ^{square meters} , located right next to the world's most famous pyramids. The project has a total investment of an estimated 1 billion USD, started in 2005 and went through periods of stagnation due to political and economic fluctuations.

GEM was conceived in the 1990s with the ambition to become the world's leading archaeological exhibition and research center. The space includes 12 themed galleries, a conservation area, an education center and a children's area.

The highlight of the museum is the 83-ton statue of Pharaoh Ramses II placed in the main hall, considered a strong greeting of ancient Egyptian civilization.

An Egyptian Ministry of Tourism official said that placing GEM next to the Great Pyramid will give tourists a comprehensive archaeological experience from outdoor heritage to modern museums, creating a sustainable tourism ecosystem.

Along with great expectations, the project has also encountered many controversies, as the prolonged progress and high costs have made the public skeptical about the investment efficiency. However, the Egyptian government affirmed that GEM is an investment for the future and an important link in the process of repositioning Egypt's role on the global tourism map.
