On the morning of May 11, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online, Dr. Dang Huy Quoc Thinh - Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, said that there are currently about 500 - 600 cancer patients on the waiting list for radiotherapy at the hospital, as well as many patients waiting for their turn for surgery.

"For patients who need radiation therapy, on average, a patient has to wait 4-6 weeks for their turn to receive radiation therapy. Although the hospital has the most accelerators in the country with 13 accelerators, doctors have to work until 10pm, but patients still have to wait a long time for radiation therapy.

Although the number of radiotherapy machines in Vietnam has increased significantly recently, most patients still focus on treatment at large centers, while a large number of radiotherapy machines at new radiotherapy facilities may not be operating at full capacity," said Dr. Thinh.

According to Dr. Thinh, the reason why many patients have to wait a long time for radiotherapy is because there are not enough accelerators, as well as not enough resources to attract cancer patients to receive treatment at lower levels.

Due to having to focus on handling a large number of patients coming for treatment, the concentration of resources for research in the field of radiotherapy of the Oncology Hospital as well as the K Hospital is affected, according to Dr. Thinh.

Dr. Diep Bao Tuan - in charge of operating the Oncology Hospital, said that after more than 1 year of operation, Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, branch 2, is now overloaded.

Every day the hospital receives about 4,800 patients for examination, 900 inpatients, and 1,000 outpatients.

The hospital currently has 1,000 beds, but it always reserves 100 beds for seriously ill patients.
