Delegates attending the National Online Conference on Polio Prevention and Control in 2025 at the Cao Bang Provincial Department of Health's meeting point.
At the Cao Bang Provincial Department of Health's location, attendees included Mr. Nong Van Thanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Health; representatives from the leadership of various departments within the Department of Health; and representatives from other leadership positions. Center for Disease Control; Hoa An Health Center, Cao Bang Health Center; Provincial General Hospital and related officials.
At the conference, the Ministry of Health gave a brief report on polio prevention and control efforts over the past years. Over the years, the Expanded Immunization Program has been effectively maintained, ensuring that more than 95% of children nationwide receive polio vaccinations annually . Thanks to this high vaccination coverage rate , Vietnam has not recorded any polio cases for the past 25 years , a fact recognized by the World Health Organization. The world recognized the elimination of the disease in 2000.
However, the polio situation in Laos is currently complex. Specifically, in Svannakhet province, Laos recorded one case of acute flaccid paralysis in a child at the end of August, and two healthy children who had contact with the child with acute flaccid paralysis tested positive for the vaccine- derived poliovirus type 1 (VDPV1) in early October. Therefore, on October 17th , Laos declared a nationwide polio epidemic. The World Health Organization warns that the risk of polio entering Vietnam is very high and imminent .
Given the complex situation regarding polio in Laos , Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Lien Huong has requested the health system to strengthen surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis , maintain vaccination coverage rates , assess risks, and improve testing capacity. The Ministry of Health has also requested localities to screen incoming travelers under 15 years old from high-risk areas, review vaccination history in this age group, and organize supplementary polio vaccinations for any missing doses. Specialized institutes are finalizing technical guidelines and developing surveillance plans to respond to the risk of disease outbreaks. polio in Vietnam.
