On July 15th, Mr. Tran Minh Lam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoai Hai commune, Hoai Nhon town (Binh Dinh province), announced that a whale had recently appeared in the waters off the commune, much to the delight of many fishermen.
Whales were spotted on the afternoon of July 14th in the sea area of Dieu Quang village, Hoai Hai commune.
A giant whale—a "huge" species—unexpectedly appeared to hunt right in front of a fisherman's boat in Binh Dinh province, off the coast of Dieu Quang village, Hoai Hai commune, Quy Nhon city. The Bryde's whale is a rare wild animal listed in Appendix I of the CITES Convention, prohibiting international trade and transport; and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).
"A giant whale has appeared in the waters off Quy Nhon. This is very exciting news. The commune has deployed forces to be on standby today, and if the whale reappears, the local people will film it and show it to everyone," Mr. Lam said.
Fisherman Huynh Ngoc De, who directly filmed the moment the whale appeared, said he was extremely surprised to see the whale surface and then snatch its prey.
At that time, Mr. Đệ and another friend were rowing a boat out to sea to fish. They stopped about 1km from the shore to fish.
"As my friend started casting his line and lay on the boat waiting, I suddenly saw the whale's mouth pop out of the water. I was very surprised, and then my friend also burst into tears because it was the first time he had seen such a sight," Mr. De recalled.
Reportedly, this whale is nearly 8 meters long and weighs about 1 ton. When it appeared near the shore, the whale swam alone; after surfacing with its mouth to catch prey, it swam away.
The Bryde's whale is a rare wild animal listed in Appendix I of the CITES Convention, prohibiting international trade and trafficking; Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).
