On the afternoon of August 2nd, after his eighth inspection of Long Thanh Airport, the Prime Minister directed that when Long Thanh Airport becomes operational, the connecting transportation infrastructure must be seamless. The Prime Minister also requested the Ministry of Construction to urgently review transportation projects.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City is urgently studying the possibility of building a railway line connecting Tan Son Nhat Airport with Long Thanh Airport.

According to the plan, the connection between Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh will be via three railway lines: Metro Line 2, Metro Line 6, and the Long Thanh - Thu Thiem railway. The specific route is that Metro Line 2 will connect to Tan Son Nhat Airport, then connect to the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway at Thu Thiem station.

As for metro line 6, after passing Tan Son Nhat airport, it will connect directly with the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh line at the Phu Huu interchange.

In fact, all three projects are being studied separately. The Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway project, approximately 42km long with a total investment of $3.5 billion, is being studied by the Ministry of Construction and is currently finalizing its pre-feasibility study report.

Going forward, the project will assign Ho Chi Minh City as the managing agency to ensure uniformity in the construction, operation, and exploitation of the railway line connecting Long Thanh Airport and Tan Son Nhat Airport.

Metro Line 6 and Metro Line 2 are two of the seven lines that Ho Chi Minh City is currently investing in under special mechanisms and policies, which were approved by the National Assembly in Resolution 188 in February 2025.

The final report on the planning of railway lines and urban rail networks in Ho Chi Minh City, conducted by the Vietnam Railway Authority, also clearly outlined the direction for connecting railways and urban rail networks between the two airports.
