The Tham Luong - Ben Cat - Nuoc Len canal renovation project is a key project under the flood control and wastewater treatment plan for the period 2020-2045, with a total investment of approximately 8,200 billion VND. Phase 1 of the project has been completed, basically forming the road along the canal. In February 2023, Ho Chi Minh City commenced Phase 2. After 11 months of construction, nearly 50% of the canal has been completed.
According to Mr. Le Thanh Tung, Head of Project Management Board 4, Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board, contractors participating in the project have mobilized more than 110 pieces of construction equipment of various types and nearly 400 workers to implement the main construction items of all 9 packages along the route.
According to Mr. Tung, some tasks require 24/7 construction, such as pouring concrete for the embankment cap beams, pouring concrete for the base slabs and bodies of secondary culverts, and manufacturing and transporting precast components. According to the schedule, the project will be completed on April 30, 2025.
The latest images of Ho Chi Minh City's longest canal, captured by a reporter from Giao Thong Newspaper:
The Tham Luong - Ben Cat - Nuoc Len canal has a total length of 31.46 km. The section from Phu Dinh port to Truong Dai bridge is over 30m wide, while the section from Truong Dai bridge to the Saigon River is over 40m wide. In 2023, the project disbursed VND 1,989.9 billion, achieving 100% of the allocated capital disbursement plan.
In the canal embankment construction category, as of January 2024, the construction teams had used vibratory pile drivers to drive prestressed concrete sheet piles (SW type) reaching 42.87% of the total volume, equivalent to 22,113 piles. The continuous pile driving to meet deadlines led many workers to report that in the early days, "even when I went to sleep at night, I could still feel the ground shaking."
Workers are diligently carrying out construction work on package XL-04, the section from Tan Ky Tan Quy Bridge to Bung Bridge.
Along the canal's course, the "slum" residential areas have disappeared. However, many sections along the canal are covered in algae and garbage. The Urban Infrastructure Investment and Construction Project Management Board has requested the Waterway Management Center to develop a plan to collect garbage and remove weeds and large trees that have been growing and developing there for many years.
In the area of inter-hamlet road 1-2-3 in Binh Chanh district, while the project is making efforts to improve environmental sanitation, many wastewater pipes from factories continue to discharge directly into the canal.
The embankment along the Tham Luong - Ben Cat - Nuoc Len canal section passing through Go Vap district has been completed, helping to revitalize the entire area.
Mr. Ho Hoang Thoai (40 years old), team leader of the construction team under the Thanh Tuan contractor at package XL05, said that they will continue working throughout the Lunar New Year 2024 with the expectation of exceeding the schedule.

The Tham Luong - Ben Cat - Nuoc Len canal renovation project is entering its final stage of pile driving along the canal banks to move on to road construction on both sides. However, the supply of sand for leveling, concrete, and construction is being disrupted due to legal issues with the supply of sand from major mines in An Giang and Dong Thap provinces. The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has requested the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to quickly coordinate with the Project Management Board to resolve the sand shortage and accelerate the project's progress as planned.
