Salah is in decline.

The debate surrounding Mohamed Salah's future in the Saudi Pro League has unexpectedly heated up following blunt statements from Ben Harburg, owner of Al-Kholood FC. In an interview with the media, Harburg warned Saudi Arabian clubs to think carefully before pursuing the 33-year-old Liverpool forward.

According to Harburg, Salah has "significantly declined" in both form and impact on the pitch. He believes that the Egyptian star's recent performances have not lived up to the status and salary he could command if he moved to the Saudi Pro League. Harburg argues that spending a huge sum on a player past his prime carries too much risk.

Al-Kholood's stance goes against the prevailing trend in Saudi Arabia in recent seasons, where many clubs have aggressively recruited older stars from Europe to enhance the league's image. Harburg argues that this strategy is only short-term, while the Saudi Pro League needs a more sustainable foundation.

"Instead of chasing big names, clubs should invest in young players who can commit long-term and develop alongside the league," Harburg emphasized. According to him, stars at the peak of their form are more suited to the long-term ambitions of Saudi Arabian football.

To illustrate, Harburg cited Vinicius Jr., the Real Madrid star, as the ideal player to build the league's image and professional quality for many years to come. While acknowledging that recruiting players like Vinicius requires very high salaries and transfer fees, Harburg believes it is a worthwhile investment.

Harburg's statement will undoubtedly generate mixed opinions, especially given that Salah remains one of the biggest icons in world football and is always a target for Saudi Arabian clubs. However, this perspective also reflects a shift in thinking among some leaders in the Saudi Pro League: from chasing stars to building a long-term development strategy.

As the next wave of player recruitment is about to begin, the question is not just "Will Salah go to Saudi Arabia?", but also whether the Saudi Pro League wants to be the league of the present or the league of the future.
