While the first two days saw Vietnam winning gold medals in canoeing, taekwondo, swimming, and petanque, December 12th presented a more complete picture: from shooting, gymnastics, karate, taekwondo, athletics, swimming to petanque, Vietnam's faces were everywhere on the highest podium. Notably, many gold medals came in breathtaking fashion, showcasing Vietnamese prowess at crucial moments.

Swimming: A change of leadership in the 400m individual medley, Huy Hoang "seals his fate" in the 1,500m.

The highlight of the evening remained the swimming pool. In the men's 400m individual medley , Nguyen Quang Thuan made a memorable upset by finishing first with a time of 4'19"98 , beating his senior Tran Hung Nguyen (silver medalist, 4'25"45 ) by nearly 6 seconds. This is a clear sign of the rise of young talent and new depth in Vietnamese swimming in the individual events.

But the biggest story remains that of Nguyen Huy Hoang . In the men's 1,500m freestyle , Vietnam's number one swimmer faced intense pressure from a 15-year-old Singaporean talent for almost the first 900m. As the pace picked up, Huy Hoang accelerated, broke away from the pack, and finished first with a time of 15'19"58 , successfully defending his gold medal. Notably, Vietnam also had a double reason to celebrate when Mai Tran Tuan Anh broke away to win the silver medal with a time of 15'22"59 , turning the men's 1,500m into a valuable "double win".

In other events, Vo Thi My Tien won a bronze medal in the women's 400m freestyle (4'17”) , while the men's 4x100m mixed relay team consisting of Tran Hung Nguyen – Cao Van Dung – Jeremie Luong – Nguyen Viet Tuong finished third, adding another medal to a successful day in swimming.

Shooting: courage in the decisive series.

Vietnam's first gold medal of the day came from the Ratchaburi shooting range. The pair Le Thi Mong Tuyen and Nguyen Tam Quang defeated host Thailand 16-14 in the 10m mixed team air rifle final.

This was a match where both Vietnamese shooters admitted to being under immense pressure, at times losing their lead, but they managed to recover thanks to Mong Tuyen's consistency and Tam Quang's confident shots at crucial moments.

Canoeing: A spectacular acceleration, a narrow victory.

In the canoe race, Nguyen Thi Huong and Ma Thi Thuy won the gold medal in the women's 200m double sculls in an emotional way: a slow start, a burst of speed from the middle of the course , and a finish with a time of 43.419 seconds .

This is Nguyen Thi Huong's second gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games, further solidifying Vietnam's position as a "gold mine" for canoeing.

Gymnastics: Phuong Thanh adds another gold medal, his "collection" continues to grow.

At the Gymnastics Stadium, Dinh Phuong Thanh won the gold medal in the men's parallel bars with 12.900 points , far ahead of the runner-up.

This medal brings Phuong Thanh's career tally to 14 SEA Games gold medals – a number that speaks volumes about his exceptional skill and endurance.

In the horizontal bar event , Phuong Thanh failed to defend his title, receiving a bronze medal , but his "one gold, one bronze" win was still a very important contribution to the team on the day of the competition.

Petanque: Double gold medal win in doubles, defeating Thailand in both men's and women's events.

Petanque continued to be a highlight. Vietnam won two gold medals in doubles on the same day: Ly Ngoc Tai and Ngo Ron defeated Thailand 10-8 in the men's doubles final; while Nguyen Thi Thi and Nguyen Thi Thuy Kieu beat the host country in the women's doubles final.

Since the start of the Games, petanque has contributed 3 gold medals , becoming one of the most effective "high-scoring" events for the Vietnamese delegation.

Martial arts: Taekwondo and Karate both have gold medals.

In taekwondo, Bac Thi Khiem won the women's 67–73kg sparring championship, demonstrating a clear advantage in both rounds.

Meanwhile, Dinh Cong Khoa won the silver medal in the men's -58kg category after a dramatic final, while Pham Minh Bao Kha and Truong Thi Kim Tuyen received the bronze medal .

Karate also brought home a valuable gold medal: Khuat Hai Nam defeated the home fighter in the men's -67kg final with a score of 6-1 , thanks to a clear series of points and good control of the match.

In the remaining events, Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly and Chu Van Duc won silver medals , giving Vietnamese karate a day of complete gold and silver medals.

Athletics: Gold medal in women's 400m, plus medal in the sprint group.

The Suphachalasai track witnessed Nguyen Thi Ngoc 's impressive performance in the women's 400m final.

The female athlete from Ha Tinh had a good start, maintained her running pace, and accelerated to cross the finish line first with a time of 52.74 seconds , helping Vietnamese athletics reclaim the gold medal in this event after a previous missed opportunity.

In the men's 400m race , Ta Ngoc Tuong won the silver medal , and Le Ngoc Phuc received the bronze medal .

Notably, the men's 400m final saw the Thai athlete break the SEA Games record, and during the qualifying round, there was an incident of incorrect results being displayed on the electronic scoreboard – another detail that highlights regrettable shortcomings in the organization of the event.

Other fronts: futsal wins opening match, volleyball tops group; men's football secures semi-final spot.

In team sports, the Vietnamese women's futsal team had a perfect start, winning 3-1 against Indonesia . The women's volleyball team also defeated Indonesia 3-0 , securing first place in Group B. In men's football, after the decisive matches, Vietnam will face the Philippines in the semi-finals (3:30 PM on December 15th) , while Thailand will play Malaysia .

December 12th thus became another day of triumph for the Vietnamese delegation: 10 gold medals in one day , spread across many sports and events, featuring both established stars and emerging talents who rose to prominence at the right moment.

Looking at the medal table, Thailand still leads the pack with 66 gold medals, 43 silver medals, and 28 bronze medals (137 medals in total), far ahead of the rest thanks to its home advantage and strong coverage in many sports.

Vietnam solidified its second place position with 24 gold medals, 17 silver medals, and 43 bronze medals (84 medals in total) – a significant step forward after a spectacular third day of competition, creating a gap of 4 gold medals over Indonesia (20 gold medals) and 9 gold medals over Singapore (15 gold medals).

The SEA Games is a long race, but a day like December 12th is enough to confirm that when the timing is right, Vietnam can still make impressive surges up the overall standings.
