To commemorate the 83rd anniversary of the Traditional Day of Vietnamese Elderly People (June 6, 1941 - June 6, 2024), on the morning of June 6, at the Presidential Palace, President To Lam met with and congratulated a delegation of exemplary elderly people from across the country.
Also attending were Central Committee members: Le Khanh Hai, Head of the Office of the President ; Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Vice President and Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front; Pham Tat Thang, Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the Central Committee for Mass Mobilization; and 120 delegates including key officials and representatives of the National Association of the Elderly.
Reporting to the President on the Association's activities over the past period, the Chairman of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly, Nguyen Thanh Binh, stated that with the attention and guidance of the Party and State leaders, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and Party committees and authorities at all levels, the Association has actively, proactively, and creatively implemented the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Party, promoted propaganda, raised awareness among elderly members, unified action, solidarity, and creativity, built a strong Association; effectively implemented the work of protecting, caring for, and promoting the role of the elderly; and actively participated in contributing to the building and protection of the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland.
Against the backdrop of rapid population aging and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which create new opportunities but also pose challenges to the economy, society, security, national defense, and the activities of associations at all levels, as well as the lives of each member, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh affirmed that the elderly remain steadfast, continuing to uphold the "Dien Hong" tradition, strengthening the great national unity, and serving as a solid bridge between the Party, the State, and the people.
The Chairman of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly pledged to strive to build the Association into a socio-political organization, contributing to the successful implementation of the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Party; to make the elderly of our country truly "a precious asset of the nation, an important force of the country, a pillar of the family and Vietnamese society" as the beloved President Ho Chi Minh once said, and at the same time worthy of the 18 golden words bestowed by the Central Committee of the Party: "The older the age, the higher the aspirations, setting a bright example for the cause of building and defending the Fatherland."
At the meeting, representatives of the elderly and key officials of the Elderly Association from several localities stated that, thanks to the attention of the Party and the State, and the support of relevant agencies and localities, the activities and movements of the elderly nationwide have seen strong and flourishing development over the years; social welfare policies for the elderly have been given attention and implemented in practice.
The delegates expressed their hope that the Party, the State, and relevant ministries and agencies would continue to implement policies to further promote the role of the elderly through amending and supplementing legal regulations on the elderly; improving the quality of healthcare; and creating more suitable jobs for the elderly.
Expressing his emotion at welcoming key leaders and exemplary elderly delegates on the occasion of the 83rd anniversary of the Vietnamese Elderly Tradition, the President respectfully extended his warmest congratulations and deepest gratitude to the delegates attending the meeting, as well as to nearly 17 million elderly people across the country; wishing them continued joy, good health, and happiness, and hoping they will continue to play their role in the cause of building and protecting the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland.
The President expressed pride in the glorious contributions of the country's elderly, emphasizing that Vietnamese elderly people throughout history have always deserved to be called the pillars of the nation, sacrificing themselves for the country, and serving as an immortal torch illuminating the spirit of self-reliance, self-strength, and the enduring existence of the nation.
Highly appreciating the report of the Chairman of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly, as well as the sharing of the delegates, the President affirmed the outstanding achievements of the Association of the Elderly in the past period, further demonstrating the "Dien Hong" tradition that has been and is being upheld in today's era.
The glorious achievements and high international standing and prestige of our country today would not have been possible without the significant contributions of Vietnam's elderly generation.
On behalf of the Party and State leaders, President To Lam welcomed and commended the important contributions of elderly people nationwide in recent times, living up to President Ho Chi Minh's teaching: "The responsibility of the elderly towards the tasks of the country is truly great."
Vietnamese elderly people truly remain a strong pillar, maintaining national stability and peace for sustainable development and progress with the times.
For the Party, the elderly remain steadfastly loyal, making positive contributions to building a cleaner and stronger Party and political system; for the Fatherland, the elderly preserve the historical and cultural essence, fostering an indomitable spirit and realizing the aspiration for national independence linked with socialism.
The President agreed with the recommendations and proposals of the Association of Elderly People, as well as the opinions expressed by the delegates, and requested that relevant levels, sectors, organizations, and associations from the central to local levels listen to the legitimate suggestions, thoughts, and aspirations of the elderly, and create mechanisms and policies to facilitate the activities of the Association and work related to the elderly in accordance with the traditional moral principle of "drinking water, remembering the source," considering the elderly as a blessing of the nation.
Businesses, philanthropists, and society as a whole are working together to preserve the great blessings of the nation, making them ever stronger and more abundant, as a way of accumulating valuable national resources.
Concerned about the healthcare of the elderly, the President noted that relevant agencies need to continue implementing specific activities and policies to improve the quality of healthcare for the elderly, so that they can live happily, healthily, and live longer; and to encourage and guide the elderly to protect and monitor their own health.
On the other hand, the President requested that the Central Committee of the Association proactively organize theoretical research and summarize practical experiences in accordance with the functions, tasks, and specific characteristics of the Association, contributing its intellect and dedication to the draft documents of the 14th Party Congress and the draft report summarizing 40 years of reform; continue to pay attention to implementing Conclusion No. 58-KL/TW dated June 23, 2023, of the Secretariat of the Central Committee "on the organization and operation of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly," consolidating the organizational structure of the Association from the central to the grassroots level, ensuring systematic and smooth operation, promoting the strength of national unity, and recognizing the elderly as an important political force of the country; and at the same time, proactively advise the Central Committee to direct the summary of 30 years of implementing Directive No. 59-CT/TW dated September 27, 1995, of the Secretariat of the Central Committee (7th term) "on caring for the elderly." This provides a theoretical and practical basis for the Central Committee to refer to and consider when formulating strategic Party policies on leading and directing work related to the elderly in the new era.
In addition, the President emphasized that amending the Law on the Elderly in Vietnam and promulgating the National Strategy on the Elderly in Vietnam for the period 2030-2050 are also urgent tasks, creating a legal basis for the activities of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly to meet new requirements, especially in the context of Vietnam's rapidly aging population; thereby making a practical contribution to Vietnam's commitment to ensuring the rights of the elderly and to the progress and equity of humanity.
On this occasion, President To Lam presented gifts to outstanding elderly delegates and key officials of the Elderly Associations nationwide.
