According to updated information from Chinese media, the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Dingri County, Tibet, has so far claimed the lives of at least 126 people, injured 188 others, and destroyed thousands of homes. Chinese authorities have confirmed that this is one of the most damaging earthquakes in Tibet in recent years.
According to preliminary reports, more than 1,000 houses collapsed, thousands of buildings were severely damaged, directly affecting approximately 6,900 people within a 20 km radius of the earthquake's epicenter. Local authorities evacuated over 30,000 people to ensure their safety.
Besides the loss of life, transportation, telecommunications, and power grids in the area were also severely affected. Many major roads were cracked and damaged, disrupting rescue efforts. The Chinese government mobilized over 1,500 rescue workers – including police, military, and medical personnel – to the area to search for and assist those still trapped under the rubble.
Immediately after the disaster, Chinese President Xi Jinping directed relevant agencies to urgently deploy search and rescue operations, provide medical treatment to the injured, repair infrastructure, and ensure essential supplies for people in the affected areas. The National Development and Reform Commission of China urgently allocated 100 million yuan to support relief efforts.
