Recently, the People's Council of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province approved the plan to convert 1.92 hectares of special-use forest land in Con Dao to other purposes for the construction of a waste treatment plant.
This is an important step towards addressing the enormous amount of waste that is putting pressure on the ecosystem and landscape of this island district.
Con Dao Island is currently moving towards green and sustainable development.
The converted forest land plots are plots 380a79, 402ca, and 403a in parcel 1, sub-area 58, ecological restoration zone, Con Dao National Park.
The purpose of the conversion is to invest in the construction of the Con Dao waste treatment plant project.
The waste treatment plant, with an expected capacity of 36 tons per day, will contribute to processing over 100,000 tons of accumulated waste at Bai Nhat and enhance recycling capabilities, bringing sustainable environmental benefits to the locality.
Currently, waste is being incinerated on the island instead of being transported to a landfill on the mainland.
However, burning waste is not a long-term solution because it can cause air pollution and is ineffective in recycling waste.
The Provincial People's Council also assigned the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province to closely supervise the implementation of the project.
Thoroughly review the area of forest that needs to be converted, and at the same time fulfill the obligation to plant replacement forests.
The conversion of land use for the project's forest area can only be carried out after all conditions stipulated in Article 19 of the Forestry Law have been met, ensuring full and proper compliance with all relevant regulations.
Every day, activities in Con Dao generate 20-25 tons of waste.
Currently, on average, Bai Nhat beach in Con Dao district receives about 20-25 tons of garbage per day. The amount of accumulated garbage on the island is over 100,000 tons, affecting the landscape and causing serious environmental pollution.
Therefore, investing in a waste treatment plant project is a necessary task. The Con Dao waste treatment plant is expected to be a sustainable solution to replace the current waste incineration method. The plant will be built in the Ben Dam area.
The construction of a waste treatment plant in Con Dao is part of the province's long-term plan to protect the environment and create conditions for the island district to develop sustainably in a green, clean, and beautiful direction.
