Recently, the People's Council of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province approved the policy of converting 1.92 hectares of special-use forest land in Con Dao to other purposes to invest in building a waste treatment plant.
This is an important step to address the huge amount of waste that is putting pressure on the ecosystem and landscape of this island district.
Con Dao is currently moving towards green and sustainable development.
The converted forest land lots are lots 380a79, 402ca, 403a in plot 1, sub-area 58, ecological restoration subdivision, Con Dao National Park.
The purpose of the conversion is to invest in the construction of the Con Dao waste treatment plant project.
The waste treatment plant, expected to have a capacity of 36 tons/day, will contribute to handling the backlog of more than 100,000 tons of waste at Bai Nhat and improve recycling capacity, bringing sustainable environmental benefits to the locality.
Currently, the island is burning garbage instead of transporting garbage from the island to a landfill on the mainland.
However, burning waste is not a long-term solution because it can cause air pollution and is ineffective in recycling waste.
The Provincial People's Council also assigned the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province to closely direct the implementation of the project.
Carefully review the forest area that needs to be converted, and at the same time fulfill the obligation to plant replacement forests.
The change of purpose of use for the project's forest area can only be carried out after meeting all conditions as prescribed in Article 19 of the Forestry Law, ensuring full compliance with relevant regulations.
Every day, activities in Con Dao generate 20-25 tons of garbage.
Currently, on average, Bai Nhat, Con Dao district receives about 20-25 tons of garbage every day. The amount of garbage accumulated on the island is more than 100,000 tons, affecting the landscape and causing serious environmental pollution.
Therefore, investing in a waste treatment plant project is a necessary task. Con Dao waste treatment plant is expected to be a sustainable solution to replace the current method of incineration. The plant will be built in Ben Dam area.
The implementation of the waste treatment plant in Con Dao is part of the province's long-term plan to protect the environment, while creating conditions for the island district to develop sustainably in a green, clean, and beautiful direction.
