My application was submitted just two weeks ago, and six professors immediately agreed.
According to information from the International University (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), Ton Nu Trieu Man, a female student who graduated from the university in November 2024 with a score of 92.4/100, has just received an 8 billion VND scholarship to pursue a PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA - a top 50 university in the world for innovation.
In just two weeks, Ton Nu Trieu Man's doctoral scholarship application was accepted by six professors from six top universities (Photo: Nguyen Ngoc).
A representative from the International University stated: "Within two weeks of submitting Mẫn's application, six professors from six top universities have already agreed to accept her. Mẫn is the fastest scholarship recipient ever at the university; other cases typically take 6-12 months."
Zhao Min shared that her decision to apply for the scholarship came quite late compared to others pursuing master's or doctoral programs. She only made this decision after graduating.
Mẫn will graduate from university in November 2024, while the application period for universities is usually from December to January, so Mẫn's decision to apply for a scholarship became even more urgent.
"Receiving the results immediately after submitting my application was a stroke of luck for me. This luck stemmed from the moment I decided to study applied mathematics; I had accumulated quite a few valuable achievements during my four years as a student, which aligned with my desired path, making my application stand out a bit more," Mẫn shared.
Having just graduated, Manh immediately pursued a PhD, explaining that she chose to study and is currently working in quantitative finance – a field where most people have in-depth education, high qualifications, and are... at the PhD level.
She also seriously believes that this field cannot remain at the university level; it requires in-depth research.

Students majoring in physics suddenly switched to mathematics.
Ton Nu Trieu Man, born in 2003, is a former physics student at Hue National High School.
As a former physics student who switched to mathematics, Man shared that this change wasn't too difficult for her, as both subjects fundamentally focus on logic.
The main challenge lies in applying the concepts from one field to another. Applying mathematics to finance requires a great deal of in-depth knowledge from both disciplines. First, there's the need for mutual understanding between the two areas, and second, the challenge of creating a suitable problem to address the specific issue.
Speaking about her learning methods, the girl from the Ton Nu family said that the most important thing in her learning approach is to understand the basic knowledge right in class. Only then can she motivate herself to delve deeper and figure out how to use that knowledge…
She said, "My method is to master all the fundamentals. For example, starting with 10 theorems and principles in mathematics, I understand them thoroughly so I can connect them and use those 10 theorems and principles to solve larger problems."

In fact, many female students are still hesitant to pursue a career in mathematics. Mẫn stated that she doesn't think gender will affect the pursuit of a career in financial mathematics; gender isn't that important.
For a field of study that combines mathematics and finance with a touch of information technology, the most important thing, according to Man, is logical thinking and the ability to connect different pieces of knowledge.
Go far to grow up.
With about six months left before starting university, Man is trying to finish her work at a Vietnamese investment fund. After completing the handover, she will return to Hue to be with her family for a few months before embarking on her new journey.
Mẫn also sought out some friends and seniors who had studied the same program at the University of California, especially those who had received the same scholarship, to build new connections. She researched essential information beforehand, such as the characteristics of the university, life in the US, and the university's requirements for the two official doctoral entrance exams, to prepare for the upcoming five-year journey.
Mẫn shared that going away helps one grow, and whether to return or stay depends on "fate" (Photo: Ngọc Nguyễn).
"When I decided to take this long journey, I hoped to become more mature, more open-minded, and make friends with many talented people in this new country… so that I could integrate better. After that, I hope to be able to focus my efforts on in-depth research, meet the standards to graduate and receive my PhD," the 23-year-old said.
Like many students going abroad for studies, Man also received the question: "Stay or return home?". The girl smiled and said: "It depends on fate! I believe that contributing to science or to my country can be done anywhere, as long as I have the will and desire to do so."
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Minh Quan, Deputy Head of the Mathematics Department, International University (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), said that Man graduated as the valedictorian of the program and received a silver medal with a GPA of 92.4. Man's academic achievement ranks third among all students graduating from the applied mathematics program in the past 11 years.
"After Mẫn achieved excellent results in statistics in the spring semester of 2023 and became the top-performing student in the class, I recruited her as a teaching assistant for the course in the fall semester of 2023."
I was deeply impressed by Mẫn's sharp mathematical thinking, quick critical thinking, and ability to creatively apply mathematical concepts.
Mẫn frequently asks extremely insightful questions to better understand mathematical theorems and models, and then seeks to apply them to practice. In her final year statistics project, Triệu Mẫn researched the topic "The Impact of Macroeconomic Indicators on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the United States" and achieved a perfect score of 100/100.
During your time as a teaching assistant, you demonstrated professionalism by meticulously preparing your lectures, clearly explaining concepts, and providing helpful feedback to support students.
"Mẫn possesses the qualities necessary for a successful academic and research career. His sharp analytical skills, combined with a systematic approach to problem-solving, enable him to handle complex issues accurately and creatively. Furthermore, Mẫn demonstrates perseverance and persistence in pursuing his academic goals," Associate Professor Minh Quân assessed.
