Can humans live peacefully with AI?

One of the questions that the book Genesis: Artificial Intelligence, Hope, and the Human Spirit raises is whether there is any way for humans to live peacefully with artificial intelligence (AI)?

This is the final book, Henry Kissinger's final thoughts and concerns, written with two technology experts Eric Schmidt and Craig Mundie. The book "forces us to think seriously about the risks and potential that AI brings to humanity", according to Bill Gates.

Henry A. Kissinger was a researcher and taught history at Harvard University before joining the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. In his later years, he devoted his mind to AI research.

His final book, co-written with two collaborators, delves into an important topic: how to protect human dignity and values in the machine age.

In this book, the three authors explore the impacts of AI on eight different areas of human activity and thinking, corresponding to eight chapters: Discovery, Brain, Reality, Politics , Security, Prosperity, Science, Strategy.

The ultimate goal is to arrive at an answer to the search for a viable strategy to balance the benefits and risks of AI. The authors analyze the prospects for peaceful coexistence and, further, symbiosis between humans and AI.

The book opens by outlining the dramatic rise of AI, posing challenges to humans' traditional knowledge base, experience, and cognitive abilities…

From a strategic and diplomatic perspective, Henry Kissinger is particularly interested in the geopolitical implications of AI.

He analyzes how this technology could alter the global balance of power, triggering new forms of competition between nations and shaking up existing international structures.

The book warns of the risk of an AI arms race, where countries push ahead with development without a full understanding of the long-term consequences.

Another important aspect is the impact of AI on human nature. The authors raise the question: increasing reliance on AI for decision-making and problem-solving could erode the ability to think independently and make moral judgments.

The book asserts that while AI offers many opportunities to solve complex problems and foster innovation, a cautious approach is needed. Clear ethical and legal frameworks must be developed to ensure that AI serves the common good without threatening fundamental human values.
