The comeback of a female doctor who used to live on the streets

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí06/11/2024

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Sabrina Cohen-Hatton has been homeless since the age of 15. Despite her very sad family life, Sabrina is determined not to drop out of school, believing that education is her only bright path forward.

Homeless since the age of 15

The story of Sabrina Cohen-Hatton (41 years old) is an inspiring one that has been featured in many British news outlets in recent years. At the age of 15, Sabrina began a life of homelessness on the streets, sleeping on shop doorsteps or in buildings that were temporarily closed for repairs.

During her time as a homeless person on the streets, Sabrina endured rude and violent treatment, and constant danger, but she also received help from many kind people.

Sabrina's family was already very poor, and things became even more dire when her father died of a brain tumor when she was 9 years old. Her mother suffered from mental illness, so life in the family became even more chaotic and precarious after her father's death.

Sabrina used to live in a poor neighborhood in Newport, Wales, UK. The area was rife with street crime, drug addicts, and drug dealers. The lives of her neighbors were also tragic, so when Sabrina and her mother fell into destitution, no one was able to help them.

At age 15, Sabrina felt her life was too tragic, seemingly without a way out, so she decided to leave home and become homeless. She was fortunate to meet kind homeless people who shared food with her, showed her places that distributed free meals, and offered relatively safe places to sleep.

Sabrina didn't blame her biological mother because she knew her mother loved her, but had mental health issues and wasn't capable of raising a child. At the time she left home, Sabrina also wasn't able to support her mother.

After leaving home, Sabrina realized that life on the streets was safer than at home – where many criminals lived right next door. She resolved to continue her education despite being homeless. Focusing on her studies was the only thing that gave Sabrina a sense of meaning in life.

At night, she slept on the streets, but in the morning, she put on her uniform to go to school. Sabrina took care of her personal hygiene in public restrooms. She kept her books in a discreet place, trying not to neglect her studies so that she could still do well on her high school graduation exams.

A spectacular comeback.

Sabrina achieved her General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSEs) with one A+, six A's, and three B's. This result made Sabrina very proud of herself. She was determined not to drop out of school because her education was her only chance for a better future.

For Sabrina, two things were most important in helping her survive her years of homelessness. First, there was the Big Issue , a print edition of the newspaper that homeless people sold to provide them with a small income during their difficult lives.

Sabrina took up selling newspapers to help cover some of her living expenses. Selling newspapers on the streets helped Sabrina develop self-confidence, discipline, and a love of work.

In addition, Menace, her dog, was Sabrina's closest friend during her time living on the streets. Menace was a stray dog. Since Menace became her companion, Sabrina felt safer and was less likely to be attacked. Gradually, Sabrina regained her balance in life.

At 17, Sabrina was already familiar with selling newspapers. Knowing that no one else was selling the Big Issue , she accepted long journeys to sell more newspapers and earn enough money to rent a small, inexpensive apartment. This gave Sabrina her first safe and secure place to call home.

In 2001, at the age of 18, Sabrina enrolled in fire and rescue training. Initially, she worked as a part-time firefighter, but within months, Sabrina proved her competence and became a full-time professional firefighter.

During her work, Sabrina also pursued a bachelor's degree in psychology. In 2010, she began a doctoral program in psychology.

Currently, at age 41, Sabrina is the chief fire and rescue officer in West Sussex, England. She holds a PhD in psychology. Sabrina is also married and has a daughter.

In 2019, after nearly 20 years of keeping her life story private, Sabrina decided to share it publicly to inspire and motivate disadvantaged teenagers, giving them hope and motivation to strive in life. She wanted to become a living example to empower vulnerable youth.

Since sharing her story, Sabrina has actively collaborated with numerous charities dedicated to helping homeless youth. Sabrina understands that homelessness is a very sensitive experience in everyone's life. Many believe that once someone becomes homeless, it's the end of their life.

Nevertheless, through her story, Sabrina wants to prove to everyone that homelessness can be overcome through hard work, learning, and a spirit of dedication to work.

The journey to escape homelessness and regain balance in life is difficult, but not impossible. Sabrina Cohen-Hatton has proven this through her life story.
