Having fought to protect his homeland, joined the People's Armed Police Force of Quang Tri province (now the Border Guard), returning to his hometown, veteran Tran Thanh Sinh, born in 1954, in Long Quang village, Trieu Trach commune, Trieu Phong district, has pioneered in successfully building the model of "green garden, clean house", waste treatment contributing to the construction of new rural areas (NTM) of the locality.

With creative and effective ways of working, he has joined hands with all levels, sectors, organizations and people to complete the goal of building a commune that meets advanced NTM standards by 2022; worthy of being a shining example for the younger generation to follow.
In 1972, when the US-puppet launched many fierce attacks on Long Quang village, Mr. Sinh joined the local guerrilla force, directly fighting with guns to protect his homeland. After liberation, he continued to join the Quang Tri People's Armed Police Force until 1980 when he left the army.
“My time in the army has trained me in many valuable qualities of a soldier. Living, fighting and working in a strict, disciplined military environment has helped me mature in terms of manners, awareness and ideology. Therefore, right from the moment I returned to my hometown to start building a family life, I have always kept in mind that in addition to focusing on labor and production to develop the economy , I must be aware of protecting the environment and creating a green, clean and beautiful landscape,” Mr. Sinh said.
Thinking is doing, in parallel with growing crops and raising livestock to generate income, Mr. Sinh self-studied and learned more about planting shade trees and fruit trees to realize the idea of creating a green space right in his house. Since 1996, in Trieu Trach commune, a very exciting movement to build cultural villages and cultural villages has been launched.
This was also the time when Mr. Sinh’s “green garden, clean house” model was basically formed as originally intended and was supported by many people. After planting a number of trees such as banyan, areca, bougainvillea, etc., Mr. Sinh continued to be determined to expand his garden; at the same time, he searched for more fruit trees and made a reasonable planting plan.
In 2014, he invested money to visit many provinces and cities in the South, especially to places with many beautiful plants to learn how to apply them in his family's garden space. Now, when entering Mr. Sinh's house, everyone can't help but praise him because the surrounding area is covered with cool, green shade.
To achieve that result, Mr. Sinh also experimented many times with different types of plants, including new varieties.
Mr. Sinh said: “Among the many types of trees I researched and brought home to plant, the most favorite one is the Taiwanese banyan tree. At that time, when I went to the southern provinces, I saw that people planted this type of tree a lot, it provided good shade and rarely shed its leaves. After worrying because I was afraid that the tree might not be suitable for the local soil and weather, I decided to bring the seedlings back to plant for testing. I also cherished the plan that if the Taiwanese banyan tree could grow in my home garden, I would expand it for my neighbors to plant together, contributing to greening and beautifying the living environment of the village and commune.”
With a passion for bonsai, combined with perseverance, hard work and many valuable qualities of a soldier, Mr. Sinh has successfully planted and propagated hundreds of Taiwan banyan trees. What is valuable is that this veteran also spreads the spirit of building a green, clean and beautiful living environment to many people through practical actions.
After successfully planting the Taiwan banyan tree, Mr. Sinh donated the seedlings to many organizations and unions in the area to plant into rows of green, beautiful trees on the country roads. Mr. Sinh is also a member of the Veterans Association, actively participating in local movements and activities with many outstanding contributions such as coordinating the planting of more than 100 banyan trees for the self-managed road section of the Veterans Association of Trieu Trach commune.
When the commune had a policy of mobilizing people to donate land to build new rural areas, Mr. Sinh voluntarily donated more than 150 square meters of land to build roads; contributed more ornamental plants in the garden and money and effort to build new rural areas. In addition, he is always ready to support fruit tree varieties, guide planting techniques, care for ornamental plants, flowers, and fruit trees for people and members of the Veterans Association.
Mr. Sinh's "green garden, clean house" model is enjoyed by many visitors because it also has many delicious fruit trees with economic value such as jackfruit, grapefruit, dragon fruit, papaya, custard apple, mango, guava... It is estimated that each year, Mr. Sinh can earn about 40 - 50 million VND from fruit trees. However, he does not sell but always gives away the freshest things from his garden to his neighbors. Not only focusing on planting and greening his garden, Mr. Sinh also sweeps leaves and composts them to make green manure.
Up to now, Mr. Sinh’s “green garden, clean house” model has become a bright spot in the local new rural construction movement. From this veteran’s model, it has now been replicated in many households, contributing to the successful implementation of new rural construction in Trieu Trach commune.
In his daily life, he always preserves the principles and disciplines of the army, distills them into life, and applies them appropriately to raise his children. Currently, all three of his sons have graduated from university, have good jobs and stable homes in Ho Chi Minh City.
“I am happy that the green garden of my family that I cultivated with my own hands has now become an ideal place for relatives and teammates to sit together and recall memories, and strive to overcome difficulties in life.
In the future, I will continue to cultivate many beautiful tree varieties, willing to provide and provide technical support to local people. I also actively participate in other local activities in the spirit of a soldier who is still alive and still contributing to his family and society," Mr. Sinh added.
