Vietnam - Korea veterans strengthen connections, expand exchanges

On December 3 in Hanoi, Senior Lieutenant General Be Xuan Truong, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front and Chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Association, received a delegation from the Korean Veterans Social Welfare Association led by Mr. Lee Jin Hyung, former Major General of the Korean Army and Advisor to Hyundai Group. The two sides discussed the potential for cooperation, especially in supporting the lives of members and promoting exchange and connection programs between Vietnamese and Korean veterans.

At the meeting, Mr. Lee Jin Hyung expressed his appreciation for the cooperation between Vietnam and Korea in recent times. He said that with his experience serving in the military and currently being an advisor to Hyundai Group, he hopes that both sides can expand support programs, create more jobs for children of veterans of both countries, thereby promoting the relationship between the two Associations to develop further.

Speaking at the reception, Senior Lieutenant General Be Xuan Truong gave an overview of the organization and activities of the Vietnam Veterans Association. Established on December 6, 1989, the Association is a socio- political organization, a member of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, with 3 million veteran members and 1.3 million demobilized soldiers. The Association is organized at 3 levels, carrying out many key tasks such as: participating in maintaining political stability and social order and safety; supporting members in economic development, hunger eradication and poverty reduction; educating the younger generation on revolutionary traditions; promoting people-to-people diplomacy. The Vietnam Veterans Association currently manages the Vietnam Friendship Village and the Veterans Newspaper.

Emphasizing the special role of the Vietnam Friendship Village, Senior Lieutenant General Be Xuan Truong said that this facility currently cares for veterans and nurtures children of veterans affected by Agent Orange/dioxin of the first, second, and third generations. Over the years, the Friendship Village has received practical support from international organizations, including many organizations from Korea.

The General also appreciated the presence and contributions of Korean enterprises such as Hyundai and Samsung in Vietnam, contributing to promoting bilateral economic cooperation. He said that the cooperation programs between the two countries, from overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines to supporting the Vietnam Friendship Village, have brought about remarkable results and opened up opportunities to strengthen people-to-people cooperation.

On this occasion, the Korean Veterans Social Welfare Association delegation presented flowers to congratulate the Vietnam Veterans Association on the occasion of the Association's founding anniversary.

Expressing his confidence in the prospects of future cooperation, Senior Lieutenant General Be Xuan Truong said that the Vietnam Veterans Association wishes to further strengthen relations with the Korean side. He hopes that through the role of Mr. Lee Jin Hyung and the members of the delegation, the two Associations will have more exchange activities and experience sharing, contributing to improving the lives of veterans and promoting a peaceful and stable environment for the development of each country.
