Diverse admission combinations

Báo Đại Đoàn KếtBáo Đại Đoàn Kết25/12/2024

From 2025, there will be 36 subject combinations for the high school graduation exam according to the new General Education Program (GDPT 2018). In addition, there will be up to 81 subject combinations for university entrance exams.

Specifically, in 2025, there will be 11 subjects in the high school graduation exam: Mathematics, Literature, Foreign Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Informatics, Technology, and Economic and Legal Education. Of these, candidates must take two compulsory subjects, Mathematics and Literature, and choose two subjects from the remaining nine. With this regulation, there are 36 ways to choose subject combinations for the high school graduation exam.

In reality, schools in Hanoi only offer about 7-8 elective subject combinations for students from grades 10 to 12. Students who choose Physics, Chemistry, and Biology rarely choose Geography, Economics and Law, or Technology. According to surveys, Technology is almost never chosen by candidates… Computer Science is also chosen very rarely. Therefore, combinations like Math – Literature – Physics – Technology; Math – Literature – Chemistry – Geography; Math – Literature – History – Technology; Math – Literature – Geography – Technology… are unlikely to occur.

Due to the regulations for the high school graduation exam with 2 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects, the combinations for university and college admissions in 2025 will change significantly with the appearance of many new combinations. Theoretically, there will be a total of 81 combinations for university and college admissions in 2025. However, some schools are narrowing down the combinations instead of expanding them. This aims to reduce the complexity of handling score discrepancies between combinations. To date, some universities have announced new admission combinations for the 2025 admissions season. For example, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade has the combination of Mathematics - Informatics - English, used for admission to Information Technology, Information Security, and Data Science majors. The University of Economics and Law, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, has the combinations of Mathematics - English - Informatics and Mathematics - English - Economic and Legal Education.

The National Economics University plans to use only 4 subject combinations instead of 9 as in 2024, including A00 (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), A01 (Mathematics, Physics, English), D01 (Mathematics, Literature, English), and D07 (Mathematics, Chemistry, English). The subject combinations for admission will have no score differences, no supplementary criteria, and all subjects will be weighted with a coefficient of 1.

Commenting on the high school graduation exam combinations from 2025, Dr. Le Viet Khuyen - Vice President of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Vietnam - said that the 4-subject exam from 2025 has a new special feature with at least 36 ways to choose exam subjects, instead of the 4 combinations as before. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training needs to have regulations to avoid a situation where schools "flourish" with different combinations, unify reasonable admission combinations, and resolutely eliminate "unusual" combinations. In addition, the Ministry of Education and Training needs to standardize the regulation of selecting high school graduation exam results as the main criterion for admission to higher education and vocational education, as directed in Resolution 29: "Innovate the method of examination and recognition of high school graduation in a way that reduces pressure and costs for society while still ensuring reliability, honesty, and accurate assessment of students' abilities, as a basis for admission to vocational education and higher education..."

Recent university admissions data shows that the high school graduation exam results are the method with the highest enrollment rate. The Ministry of Education and Training has requested universities to increase the quota for admission based on high school graduation exam scores. In addition, candidates have more opportunities to apply to universities through other methods such as using academic transcripts, foreign language certificates, and aptitude/thinking test scores.

"

On December 24, 2024, the Ministry of Education and Training officially issued Circular No. 24/2024 on the Regulations for the High School Graduation Examination. Accordingly, the 2025 High School Graduation Examination will have the following notable new points: The examination will be organized into three sessions: one session for Literature, one session for Mathematics, and one session for an elective subject. Candidates will be arranged according to their chosen subject combinations to optimize examination rooms and scores; A combination of continuous assessment scores (academic transcripts) and examination results will be used in the graduation recognition process at a 50-50 ratio. The average academic transcript score will be calculated weighted; Foreign language certificates will continue to be used for exemption from the graduation examination but will not be converted to a perfect score (10) as before; the graduation score calculation formula will no longer include foreign language scores.
