Step-by-step poverty reduction in Long Son
Long Son village (Tra My commune) has 328 households, with approximately 65% being Ca Dong ethnic minority residents. Currently, there are 28 poor households and 3 near-poor households. Over the years, policies from various programs and projects have invested heavily in helping Long Son gradually achieve sustainable poverty reduction.
Ms. Ho Thi Sai, a single mother raising two young children, is one of the poor households in Tra My commune that received support to replace their temporary house. Ms. Sai said: “The government provided 60 million VND to build a new house, plus our savings and the help of neighbors who contributed labor. Now the house is almost complete. With the upcoming rainy season, my family no longer has to worry; we can live peacefully and strive to escape poverty.”
According to Ms. Cao Thi Trinh, head of Long Son village, five years ago, approximately 50% of households in the village were poor. Thanks to government policies investing in infrastructure, electricity, roads, livelihood models, and eliminating temporary housing, the poverty rate has decreased significantly.
“The resettlement and elimination of temporary housing have had a positive impact, helping people settle down. In addition, people have received support in vocational training and methods of livestock farming and crop cultivation suitable to local conditions. By 2025, Long Son will have no more temporary houses, and roads will be expanded. In the future, the village will continue to develop tourism effectively in Cao Son village, contributing to improving the lives of the people,” Ms. Trinh said.
In the fight against poverty, people's aspirations for self-improvement have clearly changed, especially their willingness to voluntarily cooperate with the government in donating land for road construction.
To provide land for roads leading to villages and fields, many households, such as Mr. Dinh Van Sum's family, donated up to 1,650 square meters of farmland; the families of Dinh Thi Ha, Dinh Van Phuong, and Vo Thi Phuoc each donated more than 400 square meters of farmland to open roads.
The involvement of the people, along with investment resources and government policies, helps improve infrastructure and raise people's living standards.
Integrating resources for poverty reduction.
From 2021 to the present, Tra My commune has effectively implemented national target projects and programs on sustainable poverty reduction. As a result, the poverty rate has decreased by an average of 5.4% annually, and currently, the commune has 374 poor households and 182 near-poor households.
Many solutions to support poverty reduction have been implemented synchronously by the locality. From national target programs such as sustainable poverty reduction, new rural development, socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas..., infrastructure has been invested in, contributing to local socio-economic development.
Regarding poverty reduction initiatives in Tra My, various sectors and associations continue to assist poor households through practical actions such as livelihood support, sponsoring disadvantaged children, providing vocational training, and creating jobs for laborers from impoverished households.
Over the past five years, the commune has provided vocational training to 609 workers, contributing to job creation and sustainable poverty reduction.
Regarding the campaign to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, Tra My commune has provided support from various sources to build new houses or repair 257 houses for disadvantaged families, with a total cost of over 15 billion VND.
According to Ngo Quoc Vuong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tra My commune, poverty reduction and improving people's living standards are top priorities. All economic and social development programs aim to improve people's incomes.
Mr. Vuong stated: "To develop the economy and society, achieve sustainable poverty reduction, and improve the living standards of the people, Tra My commune will focus on many solutions to support the people in the coming time. Infrastructure investment will integrate various resources, creating transformations in all aspects to help Tra My move forward."
The commune will replicate successful models of economic development in agriculture, forestry, livestock farming, medicinal plant cultivation, development of Tra My cinnamon, development of farm and household economies, and fruit tree cultivation…
Along with that, we call for and attract investment into rural and mountainous areas, creating more local jobs for the people...”.
The goal for the period 2025-2030 is for Tra My commune to reduce the poverty rate by an average of 0.6% per year according to the multidimensional poverty standard, reaching below 5% by 2030. Achieving this goal requires concerted efforts and the implementation of comprehensive solutions tailored to local realities.
