The opening ceremony of the 33rd SEA Games took place on the evening of December 9th at the Rajamangala Stadium. During the introduction of the Vietnamese sports delegation, the organizing committee displayed a map of Vietnam. However, a serious error occurred: the map omitted the Spratly and Paracel Islands, as well as Phu Quoc Island. A reporter from Thanh Nien newspaper spoke with a reporter from Thairath, a renowned Thai television station, about this issue.

According to Thanh Nien Newspaper, after the Vietnamese sports management agency noticed this serious error at the opening ceremony, Vietnamese sports leaders will send an official opinion to the SEA Games 33 Organizing Committee, requesting clarification and correction. This official consultation aims to maintain respect among member countries and preserve the correct image of the regional sporting event. Vietnamese sports fans are demanding that the organizing committee apologize for this mistake."
