The program "Raising awareness to reduce child labor in the coffee industry in Vietnam" is being implemented by the Rainforest Alliance (RA) in the Central Highlands provinces.

The main funding for this program comes from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), co-sponsored by Koninklijke Douwe Egberts BV (JDE Netherlands) and Luigi Lavazza SpA (Italy). TMT Consulting Joint Stock Company is the consultant implementing the program.

Most coffee farmers in Truong Xuan commune, Dak Song district ( Dak Nong province) either take care of their coffee plants themselves or hire laborers.

This program was implemented from April 2022 to December 2024. After three years of implementation, the program has achieved positive results, contributing to raising community awareness about children's rights and child labor, and reducing child labor in local areas.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tam, Director of TMT Consulting, many children in coffee-growing regions are still involved in jobs that are unsuitable for their age and health.

Based on that reality, the company collaborated with several relevant units to establish "Playgrounds for Children" clubs, contributing to helping children and parents improve their knowledge, avoid inappropriate activities, help children learn to protect themselves, and have time for development.

The program aims to improve livelihoods and promote gender balance in household decision-making. Over the past period, TMT Consulting has collaborated with relevant agencies, businesses, and partners to implement policies protecting children and child labor.

TMT has integrated programs to organize activities that help raise awareness in order to reduce the use of child labor in coffee-growing households in local areas.

Coffee production is hard work, and coffee certification organizations consider it a criterion for assessing the level of commitment within the coffee supply chain.

Ms. H'Lan from Quang Khe commune, Dak Glong district, said: "Occasionally, during school breaks or summer vacation, high school students have to go to the fields to help their parents with suitable work. I know this affects their studies and playtime, but for rural children, it's normal."

Therefore, the program to reduce child labor in the coffee industry focuses on implementing activities in rural areas with large coffee growing regions.

Over the past period, TMT Consulting has implemented diverse and comprehensive activities, ranging from supporting better livelihood development through training in coffee cultivation techniques and livelihood models for farming households.

To date, TMT has organized activities for 1,900 farmers in project areas, including: promoting gender equality, improving the quality of children's education through tutoring programs, creating playgrounds and social integration opportunities for children through child-led clubs, and enhancing vocational training opportunities, providing appropriate tools and equipment for disadvantaged youth.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tam, Director of TMT Consulting Joint Stock Company, said: “In Dak Nong, in the coming time, the program will support the establishment of child protection teams at the village and hamlet level to handle issues related to children that may occur in the locality, such as children dropping out of school, children being abused, and violence...”.

The program "Raising awareness to reduce child labor in the coffee industry in Vietnam" provides bicycles to disadvantaged children in the project area.

In addition to these clubs, TMT also organizes many other activities such as: workshops and training for farmers, vocational training for ethnic minority youth, donating chicken breeds to children to learn about business…

"The goal of this series of activities is to contribute to raising awareness among farmers and children, reducing child labor in the coffee industry, and enhancing the value of coffee for consumers," Mr. Tam added.
