With numerous improvements in applying ESG (Environmental – Social – Governance) initiatives to its business operations in 2024, Saigon Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Corporation ( SABECO ) continues to be honored among the Top sustainable businesses in Vietnam.
The ranking was announced by the Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) on November 29 in Hanoi through the Program for Evaluating and Announcing Sustainable Enterprises in Vietnam (CSI100).
SABECO's continued inclusion in this list is not only a recognition of its unwavering efforts in sustainable development but also reflects the company's ongoing pursuit of improvement and growth. This result also demonstrates SABECO's strong commitment to creating long-term benefits for the business and its partners, while making a significant contribution to the overall development of the country.
The CSI100 was developed with expert consultation from the Central Economic Committee, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs , the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour. It is considered a comprehensive and detailed set of criteria that helps to holistically assess the performance of businesses in line with sustainable development goals. In 2024, the CSI100 program, structured into six parts and expanded to 153 indicators, added 23 indicators compared to 2023, with the main changes focusing on the environmental sector.
SABECO has made strong strides in implementing its environmental action commitments in 2024 when it officially joined the Packaging Recycling Alliance Vietnam (PRO Vietnam) last August, affirming its determination to promote the implementation of extended producer responsibility, promote the company's sustainable development goals and contribute to the country's green growth goals.
Over the years, with the goal of minimizing environmental impact and aiming for net emissions by 2050, SABECO has always focused on optimizing raw materials and energy in production, such as using recycled packaging, recovering and reusing water, and installing rooftop solar power systems. Statistics show that in 2024, SABECO successfully reduced water consumption to 2.6 liters per liter of beer compared to 3 liters in 2022, and total greenhouse gas emissions to 7.76 kg CO2e/hl compared to 9.18 kg CO2e/hl in 2022. Electricity from solar energy alone has doubled in the past two years, with 12 out of 26 factories now equipped with rooftop solar power systems. These initiatives not only improve production efficiency but also contribute to building a sustainable future where resources are used optimally and business practices are always linked to environmental responsibility.
Promoting ESG for a stronger Vietnam
Aiming to create long-term sustainable value for businesses and the Vietnamese community, SABECO has implemented numerous ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives in its business operations in recent years. SABECO's ESG efforts focus on three main areas: responding to climate change, enhancing the capacity of employees and the community, and collaborating with stakeholders to create positive impacts, all contributing to the socio-economic progress and sustainable future of Vietnam.
With a commitment to responding to climate change and always striving to minimize environmental impacts during the production process, SABECO has installed rooftop solar power at factories in the system, replaced fossil fuel boilers with biomass fuel from natural sources, helping to significantly reduce carbon emissions, sustainable packaging initiatives and CIP wastewater treatment systems have also been applied, reinforcing environmental responsibility and contributing to the country's green goals.
SABECO continuously enhances the capabilities of its employees and the community, aiming for economic, social, and environmental development through programs that improve the competitiveness of national athletes and young businesses in rural areas. Recently, the inauguration of the SABECO SRC Center also plays a crucial role in nurturing SABECO's brewing experts, while attracting young personnel to continue training the next generation of talented individuals, bringing positive impacts to the company and Vietnamese brand products.
With a focus on "Collaborating with stakeholders to create positive impacts," SABECO continuously strengthens partnerships to build a balanced and active lifestyle, ensuring compliance with laws and business ethics throughout the system, and together creating far-reaching positive impacts both internally and externally. In particular, the "SABECO Sports Hub - Connecting the Vietnamese Spirit" initiative, currently taking place in 36 provinces and cities nationwide, is the result of a successful collaboration between SABECO and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth Union. It not only aims to promote a balanced and active lifestyle but also provides a platform for community bonding through sports, cultural exchange, and culinary experiences, contributing to local development.
