Teacher Pham Thanh Nga stated that the sample exam for the high school graduation exam in Literature from 2025 onwards will have a structure closely adhering to the required learning objectives of the 2018 general education program, putting an end to the practice of learning model essays and the situation of students guessing exam questions and focusing only on certain topics.
On the afternoon of October 18th, the Ministry of Education and Training announced 18 sample exam papers for the high school graduation exam starting in 2025.
Commenting on the Literature exam, Ms. Nguyen Nguyet Nga - Literature teacher at Viet Duc High School ( Hanoi ) said that the exam closely followed the assessment requirements of the 2018 General Education Program and Circular 764 of the Ministry on regulations regarding the structure of the high school graduation exam from 2025.
“The exam clearly demonstrates the specific competency assessment requirements of the Literature subject through two main components: reading and writing. In my opinion, this sample exam is appropriate and suitable for students. The requirement to write a literary essay is reasonable, as evidenced by its integration with reading comprehension materials and its limitation to only one aspect: poetic 'imagery,' which does not pose difficulties for students in terms of content and length.”
"The social commentary essay question is topical and requires students to express their personal opinions and draw upon new knowledge. Overall, this is a fairly good exam, suitable for the curriculum requirements and the context of a 90-minute test. With this question, candidates will not have difficulty answering it, while teachers can still assess abilities and differentiate students," Ms. Nga said.
Ms. Nguyet Nga suggested that, since the reading comprehension questions are all commands, a mix of commands and questions should be used to make the test less monotonous and less authoritarian. Based on students' writing experience, the length of each paragraph should be increased to approximately 300 words, instead of the current 5-7 lines.
Meanwhile, teacher Pham Thanh Nga from Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School (Hanoi) said that the exam structure closely followed the required learning objectives of the 2018 General Education Program, putting an end to the practice of learning model-based Literature lessons and the situation of students guessing the exam questions and studying only specific topics.
“The reading comprehension section requires students to have a firm grasp of genre characteristics and good reading comprehension skills. For the writing section, the exam requires a 200-word paragraph integrating material from the reading comprehension section. The social commentary essay section has an open-ended question, allowing students to express their views and opinions. In my opinion, this sample exam is appropriate for graduation assessment. However, if used for university entrance exams, the exam needs to differentiate students in the 600-word essay writing question,” Ms. Nga stated.
The teachers in the Literature Department of the HOCMAI education system believe that the exam meets the criteria regarding the selection of materials and the question matrix.
For the reading comprehension section, the choice of a lyrical poem, not from any textbook, ensured compliance with the requirements and guidelines of the 2018 general education curriculum. The content of the first two questions points out clues to identify the poetic form and the imagery used to compare the poem to the ancient willow tree in the excerpt, which falls at the recognition level.
The reading comprehension section has shifted from testing rote memorization of knowledge to assessing students' skills.
The next three questions have a relatively familiar format and content, so candidates should not have difficulty and can complete this section of the test in about 20 minutes.
The writing section has changed: from clarifying the characteristics of the genre to analyzing the content; this has greatly reduced the psychological pressure on the candidates.
In addition, the absence of new material in this question will give candidates more time for the writing section.
In the social commentary essay question, the requirement to write a 600-word essay usually doesn't pose a challenge for candidates; the topic of artificial intelligence is also a familiar one, and choosing evidence and offering insightful arguments will be an advantage, resulting in impressive essays.
However, to achieve full marks, candidates need to provide good examples, compelling evidence, and make a strong impression. The argumentative techniques should be applied flexibly and creatively, clearly expressing the writer's viewpoint.
