Of the 17 times the Southeast Asian Futsal Championship has been held, up to this year’s tournament, Thailand has won 16 times. Only once has Thailand failed to take the lead, that was in 2010.
14 years ago, the tournament was held in Vietnam. For various reasons, Thailand did not participate. The remaining teams in Southeast Asia competed for the title and Indonesia was the successful team.
The Indonesian team defeated Malaysia in the final, while the Vietnamese futsal team finished third. The above achievement helped Indonesia surpass the Vietnamese futsal team, becoming the second most successful team in Southeast Asia, after Thailand.
The Indonesian futsal team has good quality.
In addition to the 2010 championship, Indonesia also finished second four times, in 2006, 2008, 2019 and 2022. In these four runner-up finishes, Indonesia lost to Thailand in the final. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese futsal team finished second in the region twice, in 2009 and 2012.
In 2018, Indonesia defeated the Vietnamese futsal team 3-1 in the third-place match of the Southeast Asian tournament. On the contrary, in 2013 and 2014, the Vietnamese futsal team defeated the Indonesian team in the third-place match. The first time we won with a score of 7-3 and the second time we won in a penalty shootout (after the two teams tied 2-2 in regulation time and extra time).
In general, unlike Thailand, the Vietnamese futsal team is not afraid of Indonesia in one-on-one encounters. The final of the 2024 Southeast Asian Futsal Championship is also the first time the Vietnamese and Indonesian teams have met in a regional championship match.
In the World Cup arena, Indonesia has never been present in the final round, compared to the two times the Vietnamese futsal team participated in the World Championship finals (2016 and 2021). However, in recent times, the Indonesian futsal team has been well invested and they are getting stronger.
The proof is that even Thailand now wants to win against Indonesia is no longer as easy as before. Particularly in the 2024 Southeast Asian Championship, Indonesia beat Thailand 5-1 in the semi-finals on November 8. This is a big shock for Southeast Asian futsal.
In the group stage of this year's tournament, Indonesia won all three matches against opponents Australia (3-1), Myanmar (5-1) and Cambodia (9-0). Through a total of four matches since the beginning of the tournament, Indonesia scored 22 goals (an average of 5.5 goals/match) and conceded three goals (an average of 0.75 goals/match).
The corresponding numbers of the Vietnam futsal team after a total of 5 matches since the beginning of the tournament (in the group stage, Vietnam played 1 more match than Indonesia) are 28 goals scored (average 5.6 goals/match) and 7 goals conceded (average 2.8 goals/match).
In the Indonesian squad, there is the very dangerous Pivot (equivalent to the striker position in football) Evan Soumilena. In addition, captain Iqbal Iskandar is also a notable face of the Indonesian futsal team. These are the faces that the Vietnamese futsal team needs to be wary of.
