Playing on home soil in Brazil, Argentina secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a header from Otamendi following a corner kick taken by Celso in the 63rd minute.
The victory secured Messi and his teammates a firm lead, while Brazil dropped to sixth place in the South American World Cup 2026 qualifying standings after losing all three of their most recent matches.
Moreover, losing to arch-rival Argentina brought an end to Brazil's proud achievement of never having lost at home in World Cup qualifiers.
Now, only one team holds this record: Spain.
According to Argentinian journalist MisterChip, at the beginning of last year, there were still three teams that shared an unbeaten home record: Italy, Brazil, and Spain.
However, the EURO 2020 champions lost to North Macedonia in March 2022, and Brazil's 64-match unbeaten streak at home was recently ended by Argentina, leaving only Spain to maintain the record.
Spain's achievement is even more impressive considering they have only hosted the World Cup once (1982), meaning they had to participate in the qualifying rounds for all other World Cups.
In the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Spain topped Group B with six wins, one draw, and one loss.
