(Baohatinh.vn) - The project to expand Thach Kim fishing port (Loc Ha commune, Ha Tinh) has been completed and officially put into use, creating more motivation to synchronize fishing infrastructure, contributing to preventing IUU fishing.

Returning after a nearly week-long offshore trip, fisherman Tran Xuan Hanh (Loc Ha commune) shared: “Now the new wharf area has been expanded, with large ships moored outside and small ships inside, so it looks much more orderly, making it easier to anchor and sell seafood. We are more excited and confident in bringing our boats to port.”

The Thach Kim fishing port expansion investment project was completed and put into operation from August 10, 2025.

Not only local fishermen, many out-of-province ship owners also clearly feel the change from the new wharf system put into operation. Owning a fishing boat with a capacity of more than 330CV, specializing in offshore purse seine fishing, fisherman Nguyen Van Sen - owner of ship TH-91386-TS ( Thanh Hoa ) regularly carries out procedures for entering and leaving, anchoring at Thach Kim port. Mr. Nguyen Van Sen said: "Previously, the old port was quite narrow, boats were crowded together, the main channel was silted, so we often had to wait for the tide to rise or anchor outside the estuary to bring seafood to shore for sale, which somewhat affected the quality of the products. Now the new port is more spacious, so it is convenient for ships to dock for trade, saving costs."

It is known that Thach Kim fishing port and the storm shelter area for fishing boats in Cua Sot were put into use in 2007. After nearly two decades, many items have deteriorated, and the scale can no longer meet the increasing number and capacity of boats. In that context, in July 2021, the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province approved the Feasibility Study Report of the Investment Project to expand Thach Kim fishing port (former Loc Ha district).

The project aims to complete the fishing port system in Ha Tinh province in accordance with the Planning of the fishing port system and storm shelters for fishing vessels in the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Government. The Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Agricultural and Rural Development Works of Ha Tinh province - the investor - has focused on implementing synchronous solutions to complete the project on schedule and promptly hand over and put it into official operation from August 10, 2025.

Thach Kim fishing port, one of the largest fishing ports, has a bustling seafood business.

This has significantly reduced pressure on the main wharf area, increased the capacity to receive ships, and improved conditions for loading, unloading, preserving, and transporting seafood. Along with that, the upgraded infrastructure system is the foundation for tightening the management of fishing vessels, controlling fishing logs, implementing traceability, and contributing to the enforcement of regulations against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

According to the Vietnam Fisheries Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2045, Vietnam will promote industrialization and modernization of the industry in a market-oriented, environmentally friendly manner, protect, regenerate and develop aquatic resources, and conserve biodiversity to adapt to climate change. In particular, focusing on investing in the development of synchronous technical infrastructure; exploiting aquatic products in conjunction with combating IUU fishing is one of the top strategic tasks.

Thach Kim fishing port needs more synchronous investment in technical infrastructure items such as: roof, lighting system, especially dredging the channel and water area in front of the port.

To achieve maximum efficiency in that direction, Thach Kim fishing port needs more synchronous investment in technical infrastructure items such as: roof, lighting system, especially dredging the channel and water area in front of the port.

Mr. Than Quoc Te - Deputy Director of the Management Board of fishing ports and storm shelters for fishing vessels in Ha Tinh emphasized: "The Thach Kim fishing port expansion project is built on an area of 1.5 hectares, with 2 berths for ships with a capacity of over 400CV (berth length 100m, width 12m) and 90CV (berth length 100m, width 4m), dredging the area in front of the berths to a depth of 2.5m. However, the channel leading to the port (an area outside the dredging scope of the 2024 project - PV) is still being seriously silted, the average annual volume of silted sand is estimated at more than 100,000m3 , so many ships wanting to enter the port have to wait for high tide, which can easily damage machinery, leading to fishermen being passive in the process of going offshore to exploit. We hope that relevant units will continue to pay attention to investing and implementing "Dredging project to synchronously and maximize the efficiency of Thach Kim fishing port".

The inlet and the waters in front of the port (area outside the project implementation in 2024) are still seriously silted.

It is known that currently, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ha Tinh has appraised the Report on the investment proposal for the dredging project of the channel and the water area in front of Thach Kim fishing port with the following items: dredging the channel and the area in front of the port with a dredging area of 6 hectares, building a wharf house, building a wharf canopy, investing in a wharf equipment system, etc. established by the Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Agricultural and Rural Development Works of Ha Tinh province to ensure the operational capacity of a type II fishing port with an output of aquatic products through the port reaching over 15,000 tons/year.

The project will contribute to completing the infrastructure system, serving the sustainable development of the province's fisheries industry, ensuring traffic safety and the ability to anchor and shelter from natural disasters for fishing boats in the area.
