COBOL PARK Co., Ltd., a joint venture between an FPT subsidiary in Japan and leading Japanese technology group SCSK, has officially commenced operations. SCSK holds 66.7% of the shares, while FPT owns 33.3%.

This joint venture aims to support organizations, particularly financial institutions, that are using mainframe technology and legacy systems programmed in the COBOL language, ensuring operational continuity and promoting digital transformation.

The new joint venture also demonstrates FPT and SCSK's commitment to jointly addressing the "Digital Cliff 2025"—a challenge that the Japanese Ministry of Economy , Trade and Industry has warned about, highlighting the urgent need for maintenance and modernization of legacy systems, especially mainframe computers.

Built upon legacy technologies like COBOL, mainframe computers remain the primary technology platform for financial institutions due to their powerful processing capabilities and high reliability. However, the COBOL engineering workforce for this platform is aging rapidly, leading to a shortage of resources.

COBOL PARK will provide human resources and strategic planning to businesses in Japan's financial industry to ensure business continuity, while also offering a clear roadmap for future modernization and system transformation. The Japanese financial system transformation market is estimated to be worth 500 billion yen.

COBOL PARK was established based on the successful partnership between FPT and SCSK in providing IT services in the Asia -Pacific region since 2018. The joint venture is expected to leverage SCSK's more than 50 years of experience in deploying systems for various industries in Japan with FPT's technological expertise, global network of experts, and highly qualified young workforce.

At the same time, FPT will leverage its strengths in artificial intelligence (AI) to provide AI-integrated solutions that modernize mainframe systems, optimize operational efficiency, and deliver long-term results for customers.

Dr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of FPT, affirmed: “FPT and SCSK are pioneers in the field of application management, infrastructure services, and especially in modernizing legacy systems. With COBOL PARK, we connect the past, present, and future by maintaining legacy systems, supporting current operations, and paving the way for future innovations.”

"By integrating AI into every task, the joint venture will bring about a smart modernization method that aligns with long-term development trends and delivers lasting value to customers," said the Chairman of FPT.

Mr. Takaaki Toma, CEO and President of SCSK, shared that for a long time, Japanese companies have maintained legacy systems, increasing maintenance costs and security risks, hindering business operations. Furthermore, the rapidly aging workforce of engineers using the COBOL programming language, coupled with a shortage of IT personnel, creates societal challenges and impedes system upgrades and innovations.

Faced with this challenge, SCSK partnered with FPT to establish COBOL PARK, offering a system transformation strategy and services to ensure seamless business operations.

"In this way, we aim to upgrade, modernize, and optimize the IT systems at Japanese companies. In the future, we will continue to leverage our advantages to enhance competitiveness and business value," said Takaaki Toma.
