Steel prices today, December 12th: Global prices slightly decrease, domestic prices remain unchanged.

Global market developments

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), the price of rebar for June 2026 delivery fell by 17 yuan to 3,075 yuan/tonne. Similarly, most other steel indices declined: rebar lost 0.35%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.12%, and stainless steel dropped 0.16%. Only wire rod remained unchanged in price.

For iron ore, prices fluctuated in opposite directions as investors limited large transactions while awaiting policy developments from Beijing. On the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE), the January 2026 iron ore futures contract rose 0.26% to 769 yuan/tonne (equivalent to $108.91/tonne). Conversely, on the Singapore exchange, the same contract fell 0.34% to $102.4/tonne.

According to Jinyuan Futures, the market is anticipating a new economic stimulus package in China, especially after the US Federal Reserve's decision to lower interest rates. Investors are now awaiting the Central Economic Work Conference, where the Chinese government will announce its growth targets and policy direction for the coming year. However, fundamental factors remain unfavorable, with increased iron ore supply and weakening steel demand continuing to put pressure on prices.

Domestic steel prices remain stable.

In contrast to the global market, domestic construction steel prices on December 12th remained unchanged. Major companies such as Hoa Phat, VAS, and Pomina maintained their listed prices across all three regions.
