Hours after a cordial meeting on November 13th with outgoing President Joe Biden at the White House, on his way back to his Florida residence, President-elect Donald Trump announced his personnel choices for his upcoming administration. He nominated Representative Matt Gaetz for Attorney General. Lawmakers in both the House and Senate were clearly surprised by this nomination, and some senators publicly questioned whether Gaetz would be confirmed by the Senate. Gaetz is under investigation by the House for alleged misconduct, which he denies. He is also unpopular with some Republican colleagues for leading the effort to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last year. Another surprising nomination was Tulsi Gabbard, who was nominated to be Director of National Intelligence. The day before, Trump also announced the nomination of Fox News host Pete Hegseth, 44, as Secretary of Defense. Many lawmakers in Washington felt these nominations "went too far." But the nomination of Gaetz was the most surprising, even from those close to him. "He's smart. The confirmation hearing will be very important. He'll face some tough questions," said Senator Lindsey Graham, adding that he "tends to support the President-elect's cabinet selections." Trump's choices show a determination to appoint those he wants to key positions, fulfilling campaign promises. The President-elect has pledged to pursue mass deportations and reform the Justice Department , an agency he accuses of partisan infighting. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) commented that most of Trump's choices show he wants to secure his nominees and that he values loyalty, a quality all presidents appreciate. Gaetz's selection is seen as beneficial in promoting the President-elect's "America First" agenda. "Trump is making his choices early on, and he knows them well, which is very different from his first term when he barely knew everyone in his cabinet," said Senator Chuck Grassley. Trump ally and former administration official Richard Grenell suggested Gaetz "will be Attorney General for the people, not for the Washington elite." "People in Washington won't be happy, but that just means common sense has returned. This is what America voted for Trump," the former official commented. Hegseth's nomination was equally surprising, with some arguing he lacked experience for the position of Secretary of Defense. However, Senator Mike Rounds stated, "I think Pete Hegseth is surprising only because most of us don't know him. But to me, he seems to have a track record." Hegseth is an infantry captain in the National Guard, serving at Guantanamo Bay and later in Iraq. In 2012, he returned to active duty, serving in Afghanistan with the Minnesota National Guard. Senator Joni Ernst, a former military officer, suggested that Hegseth would make "a very strong Secretary of Defense."
