Google Messages has just begun rolling out a major redesign to its photo viewer after a testing period earlier this year, bringing a more intuitive and modern experience to users when viewing images and videos in conversations.

Accordingly, when the user selects any photo or video in the conversation, the application will open a completely new full-screen view. This interface displays other multimedia content in the same message thread on both sides, allowing swiping to quickly switch between items. The background is blurred based on the photo being viewed, the content is placed in the center with rounded corners and comes with Nano Banana's Remix shortcut.

The top of the interface shows who sent it and when, along with two download and delete buttons. An expanded three-dot menu offers additional actions like Forward, Share, Star, and View Details. At the bottom, a row of emojis – including Photomoji – is displayed for quick replies. A button at the end of the row opens the full list of emojis. There’s also a comment counter in the bottom left corner, which shows the number of replies in real time.
Meanwhile, in the main conversation interface, Google Messages has started grouping images sent at the same time to display more neatly. Previously, each image would appear one at a time. However, if the user exits the conversation or the app is not open, the images will be grouped together as soon as they return.

The redesigned photo viewer is now widely distributed to both the stable and beta channels via the latest version of Google Messages, after being in testing since June.
Additionally, Google has also added a small change to the full-screen camera interface, with more rounded bottom corners. This feature is still in the testing phase and will continue to be refined in the coming time.
