According to the plan, South Korea's research and development (R&D) budget for 2026 will double to a record 35.3 trillion won (nearly $25.6 billion). Of this amount, 2.3 trillion won will be allocated to AI development alone, a 106% increase compared to 2025.
Additionally, Seoul will establish a 100 trillion won National Growth Fund, combining both public and private resources, to support 15 AI transformation projects in fields such as robotics, automobiles, and shipbuilding, and 15 mega-innovation initiatives in advanced materials, components, energy, climate, and future preparedness.
Earlier, speaking at the first meeting of the National Science and Technology Advisory Council at the Presidential Office in Yongsan, President Lee Jae Myung emphasized: “The next 2-3 years will be the golden age of AI. If we take even half a step ahead, South Korea will become a leading nation with many opportunities and advantages. Conversely, if we lag behind, South Korea will forever be a follower.”
