According to the plan, South Korea's research and development (R&D) budget in 2026 will double to a record 35.3 trillion won (nearly 25.6 billion USD). Of this, the money spent on AI development alone is 2.3 trillion won, an increase of 106% compared to 2025.

In addition, Seoul will establish a 100 trillion won National Growth Fund, combining both public and private resources, to support 15 AI transformation projects in areas such as robotics, automobiles, shipbuilding, and 15 mega-innovation initiatives in advanced materials, components, energy, climate, and future preparedness.

Earlier, when speaking at the first meeting of the National Science and Technology Advisory Council at the Presidential Office in Yongsan, President Lee Jae Myung emphasized: “The next 2-3 years is the golden period of AI. If we are even half a step ahead, Korea will become a leading country with many opportunities and advantages. On the contrary, if we are slow, Korea will always be a follower.”
